Wall of Fame
Substad garnered a pair of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III All-America honors in cross country at UWL, finishing seventh in 2001 and 34th in 1999. He earned two all-region accolades, placing second in 2001 and fifth in 1999.
He had three top-17 finishes at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships, including third in 2001, fourth in 1999 and 17th in 1998.
Substad was a member of UWL's NCAA Division III Championship team in 2001. The Eagles placed third at the 1999 national championships and sixth in 1998.
UWL won three WIAC Cross Country titles (1998-99, 2001) with Substad.
On the track, Substad earned three NCAA Division III All-America honors in the steeplechase, placing fourth (1999), eighth (2000) and second (2001). He also earned NCAA Division III Indoor All-America accolades as a member of the fourth-place distance medley relay (2000). Substad won two (1999, 2001) WIAC titles in the steeplechase and was also a member of UWL's winning 4x800-meter relay (2001).
Substad served as cross country and track & field team captain in his junior and senior seasons at UWL. He was a member of two (1998, 2000) indoor and three (1998-2000) outdoor track & field WIAC Championship teams. The Eagles placed fourth at the 1998 and 2000 NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships while finishing tied for eighth in 1999. At the indoor national championships, Substad was a member of UWL's second-place squad in 1999, fifth in 2000 and eighth in 1998.
A native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Substad earned his bachelor's degree from UWL in 2001 in information systems.
