Men's Track and Field Set To Host WIAC Championships; UWL Strives for 60th Title at WIAC Championships

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track and field team will strive for its 60th title at the 2026 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Outdoor Championship (presented by Culver's) at the two-day meet at UW-La Crosse's Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex May 1-2. This will mark the 107th gathering of conference teams.

WIAC OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 
  • Competition at this year's championship will begin at 1 p.m. on May 1, and 11:00 a.m. on May 2. Medals will be awarded to the top-eight finishers in each of the individual events and runners comprising the top-six relay teams, while All-Conference designation will be given to the top-three finishers in each event.
  • The Eagles have won a conference-leading 59 titles including 33 of the past 34 championships. 
  • UWL won the 2025 WIAC Outdoor Championships with 252.50 points while UW-Eau Claire was second with 158 points. UW-Oshkosh finished third with 133, UW-Whitewater fourth with 121, UW-River Falls fifth with 44.5, UW-Platteville sixth with 44, UW-Stout seventh with 41 and UW-Stevens Point eighth with 22.
  • This year's meet features three teams ranked in the top-25 of U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division III Rating Index distributed on April 28. UW-La Crosse is the top-ranked team, while UW-Oshkosh is third and UW-Eau Claire seventh.

THE EAGLES AT THE WIAC INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

ON THE TRACK
  • The Eagles return three conference champions from the 2025 Outdoor Championships including Collin Conzemius (400-meter run), Aidan Matthai (10,000-meter run), Cael Schoemann (800-meter run). Other Eagles to have won a WIAC Outdoor Championship is Chase Doornink (2023 - 400-meter), Luke Schroeder (2023 - 400-meter hurdles, 2024 - 110-meter hurdles), and Joey Sullivan (2024 - 5000-meter run).
  • Schroeder comes into the Championships with the second fastest time this season in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.35. In the 110-meter hurdles, Schroeder just missed the NCAA III national record due to wind conditions as he has the top time so far at 13.58. His time of 20.78 in the 200-meter dash is second in the WIAC and third in the NCAA III. 
  • Doornink has the top time in the WIAC this season in the 400-meter dash (46.91) while Devin Williams ranks second (47.26), Conzemius third (47.57) and Andrew Hackbarth fourth (48.48). 
  • Finn Patenaude will look for a WIAC Championship in the 400-meter hurdles as he has the second fastest WIAC time this season (52.44). 
  • Schoemann will try to become the first athlete in WIAC history to win four consecutive 800-meter runs as he comes in with the top WIAC time and second in NCAA III (1:48.84). 
  • UWL has the top four times in the 1500-meter run led by Jayden Zywicki (3:50.16) and followed by Schoemann (3:53.27), Nico Castellanos (3:53.52) and Aiden Jakubic (3:56.59). 
  • In the 5,000-meter run, Aidan Matthai has the best time in the WIAC and second in the NCAA III at 13:54.56). Also having a top-five time in the WIAC is Charles Vater (14:02.49), Owen Clark (14:03.12), Sullivan (14:04.95) and Zywicki (14:06.22). 
  • Matthai also ranks second in the WIAC in the 10000-meter run with a time of 29:33.70. 
  • Sullivan will look to be the first Eagle since 2019 to win a WIAC title in the 3000-meter steeplechase as he has the top WIAC time this season (8:46.84). Also with a top four WIAC time is Zywicki (8:52.92), Clark (8:54.74) and Vater (8:58.77). 
  • The 4x100 relay team has the second fastest WIAC time this season of 39.88.
  • UWL will try to win its fourth straight 4x400 relay championship as they have the second fastest time (3:09.61) in both the WIAC and NCAA III. 


IN THE FIELD
  • Andrew Tumminaro will look to defend his 2024 and 2025 Outdoor WIAC titles in the pole vault as he comes into this year's championship with sixth ranked WIAC vault of 16-3 1/2. Gaven Lange is second in the WIAC with a mark of 16-9 1/4 while Connor Boyle is third (16-7 1/2) and tied for seventh is Josh Brunner and Ethan Brissette (16-3 1/4). 
  • Mitchell Eldredge has the second best jump this season in the high jump as he recorded a mark of 6-7 at the UWL Phil Esten Challenge. 
  • Ranked fourth in the long jump in the WIAC coming into the weekend is Sebastian Jefferson (23-7 1/4) while Trent Backeberg is fifth (23-1 3/4). 
  • UWL brings the top four marks in the triple jump led by Christian Crumbaker's mark of 48-6 1/4 while Gavin Sargeant has a season best jump of 47-11 1/4. Next for the Eagles is Carter Pearson with a jump of 47-9 1/4 followed by Gabe Olsen's 47-1 3/4. 
  • In the shot put, UWL is led by Jake Gardner who has the second best throw in the WIAC this season with a mark of 55-9 while Ben Youngworth is ranked fourth (54-10). 
  • Anthony Staryszak leads the Eagles in the discus with the second ranked mark of 170-7.
  • This past weekend, Logan Powers recorded the top mark in the WIAC in the hammer with a throw of 195-11. 
  • The Eagles have four of the top five marks in the javelin including Nate Lawrence (179-7), Schroeder (176-8), Lange (173-11) and Staryszak (169-1). 
  • Nolan Seaberg ranks third coming into the weekend in the decathlon with a top score of 6,531 points which came at the UWL Phil Esten Challenge. 


JOSH BUCHHOLTZ
  • Coach Buchholtz is in his 18th season as UWL's head coach.
  • The Eagles have won the WIAC Outdoor Championships 16 times under Buchholtz. 
  • Buchholtz led the Eagles to back-to-back (2024 and 2025) NCAA III Outdoor Championships and the Eagles have won six national titles under Buchholtz (2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2024, 2025). UWL has also won seven NCAA III Indoor National Championships under Buchholtz's direction (2009, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2023, 2024, 2025). 
  • He has been voted the USTFCCCA Outdoor Men's National Coach of the Year six times (2013, 2015-17, 2024-2025) and the USTFCCCA Outdoor Region Coach of the Year nine times (2012-14, 2017, 2019, 2021, 2023-25).
