UWL Falls in NCAA Second Round at Gustavus Adolphus; Eagles Tie Single-Season School Record with 21 Victories

St. Peter, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's tennis team fell 4-0 at Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) Saturday afternoon in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Second Round at the Wilkinson Tennis Complex.

The Eagles, ranked 28th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), finish their season at 21-3. The Gusties, ranked 19th, improve to 30-5 and advance to face second ranked the University of Chicago (Ill.) in the third round on Sunday, May 10.

UWL tied its single-season school record with 21 wins after a 4-0 victory over UW-Superior in the first round of the national championships on Friday, May 8. UWL went 21-5 in 2010-11 and 2011-12.

Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) earned the doubles point Saturday to take a 1-0 lead. The Gusties' Molly Austin/Elena Davis defeated the Eagles' Lily Jorgenson/Hannah Cady at No. 2 doubles (6-1) while Ella De Young/Allison Szalay beat Maia Samuelson/Caitlyn Stadter at No. 3 (6-1).

The match at No. 1 doubles between UWL's Tasha Bailey/Shelby Roth and Gustavus Adolphus' (Minn.) Kaya DeBruin/Karina Elvestrom was abandoned.

Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) took a 2-0 lead at No. 3 singles with Austin defeating Stadter (6-0, 6-1). Davis extended the lead to 3-0 after a victory over Cady at No. 6 singles (6-1, 6-1). The Gusties secured the team win with Elvestrom defeating Bailey at No. 1 (6-2, 6-1).

The matches between Roth and DeBruin (No. 2), Jorgenson and the Gusties' Omar Noor (No. 4) and UWL's Lauren Lindow and De Young (No. 5) were abandoned.

UWL earned one of 37 automatic bids to the NCAA Division III Championships with a 4-3 victory over UW-Whitewater in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament Championship match on April 25.

Making its third appearance in school history in the NCAA Division III Championships and first since 2007, the Eagles are now 3-3 all-time in the national tournament.

UWL went 1-1 in the 2001 national tournament in its first career appearance, defeating DePauw University (Ind.) in the Midwest Regional Semifinals (5-4) before losing to Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) in the Midwest Regional Finals (8-1). The Eagles also went 1-1 in the 2007 national tournament, earning a 5-0 win over Grinnell College (Iowa) in the first round before a 5-1 loss to Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) in the second round.

Finishing 6-0 in conference duals this year, UWL claimed its 16th league title in school history and first since 2006. The Eagles finished undefeated in conference duals for the third time in school history (2005, 2006, 2025).
