UWL Earns NCAA III First Round Victory over UW-Superior; Ties School Record for Single-Season Wins; Advances to Face Gustavus Adolphus

St. Peter, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's tennis team advanced to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Second Round with a 4-0 victory over UW-Superior Friday afternoon at the Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) Wilkinson Tennis Complex.

UWL, ranked 28th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), advances to face host 19th-ranked Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) in the second round on Saturday, May 9 at 2 p.m. The Gusties earned a first round bye.

UWL improves to 21-2 with Friday's victory, tying the school record for single-season wins. UWL went 21-5 in 2010-11 and 2011-12.

It marks the Eagles' second win over the Yellowjackets this season after a 7-0 victory at UW-Superior on April 11. UW-Superior ends its season at 19-8.

The Eagles secured the doubles point in Friday's win over the Yellowjackets as Lily Jorgenson/Hannah Cady defeated Elif Oezen/Addison Fee at No. 2 doubles (6-0) and Maia Samuelson/Caitlyn Stadter beat Claudia Curtis/Daylyn Drew at No. 3 (6-0).

The match at No. 1 doubles between UWL's Tasha Bailey/Shelby Roth and UW-Superior's Anouk Bluemm/Kathryn Jonas was abandoned.

In singles play, Roth earned the Eagles' first team point with a straight set victory (6-2, 6-0) victory over Oezen at No. 2.

Cady gave UWL a 3-0 lead as she defeated Addison Fee at No. 6 singles (6-0, 6-1).

Bailey completed the team win at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-2) over Bluemm to advance UWL to Saturday's second round.

The matches at No. 3 singles between Stadter and Curtis, No. 4 between Jorgenson and Jonas and No. 5 between Lauren Lindow and Drew were abandoned.

UWL earned one of 37 automatic bids to the NCAA Division III Championships with a 4-3 victory over UW-Whitewater in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament Championship match on April 25.

Making its third appearance in school history in the NCAA Division III Championships and first since 2007, the Eagles improve to 3-2 all-time in the national tournament. UWL went 1-1 in the 2001 national tournament in its first career appearance, defeating DePauw University (Ind.) in the Midwest Regional Semifinals (5-4) before losing to Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) in the Midwest Regional Finals (8-1).

The Eagles also went 1-1 in the 2007 national tournament, earning a 5-0 win over Grinnell College (Iowa) in the first round before a 5-1 loss to Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) in the second round.

Finishing 6-0 in conference duals this year, UWL claimed its 16th league title in school history and first since 2006. The Eagles finished undefeated in conference duals for the third time in school history (2005, 2006, 2025).
