UWL Earns NCAA Division III Championship Bid; Set to Play UW-Superior in First Round Friday at Gustavus Adolphus

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's tennis team faces UW-Superior in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III First Round on Friday, May 8 in a match played at Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.). Match time is yet to be announced.

UWL, 20-2 on the season and ranked 28th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association for NCAA Division III, earned a 7-0 victory at UW-Superior on April 11. The Yellowjackets enter the national championships with a 19-7 record. The winner of the first round match advances to face host Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) on Saturday, May 9. The Gusties are ranked 20th and 29-5 on the season.

UWL captured the WIAC Tournament with a 4-3 victory over UW-Whitewater.


Top-ranked the University of Chicago (Ill.) also has a first round bye in the matches held at Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.). The Maroons, 16-4, will face the winner of the first round match between 64th-ranked Luther College (Iowa) and Illinois Tech. Luther (Iowa) is 15-8 and Illinois Tech 11-9 on the year. 

The second round winners will play in the third round on Sunday, May 10.

UWL earned one of 37 automatic bids to the NCAA Division III Championships with a 4-3 victory over UW-Whitewater in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament Championship match on April 25.

Making its third appearance in school history in the NCAA Division III Championships and first since 2007, the Eagles went 1-1 in the 2001 national tournament in its first career appearance. UWL defeated DePauw University (Ind.) in the Midwest Regional Semifinals (5-4) before losing to Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) in the Midwest Regional Finals (8-1).

The Eagles also went 1-1 in the 2007 national tournament, earning a 5-0 win over Grinnell College (Iowa) in the first round before a 5-1 loss to Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) in the second round.

Finishing 6-0 in conference duals this year, UWL claimed its 16th league title in school history and first since 2006. The Eagles finished undefeated in conference duals for the third time in school history (2005, 2006, 2025).

NCAA Tennis LogoUWL is 135-36 (.789) in singles play this season with Lily Jorgenson leading in overall victories with a 21-2 record. Lauren Lindow (19-6) and Caitlyn Stadter (19-8) have both recorded 19 wins while Tasha Bailey (16-4) and Shelby Roth (16-7) have earned 16 victories. Hannah Cady (14-3) in sixth in overall wins.

The Eagles are 79-15 (.840) in doubles with Bailey/Roth leading in overall victories with 18 (18-5). Cady/Jorgenson are 12-0 while Maia Samuelson/Stadter are 10-1.

UWL's 20 wins this year are tied for third in single-school history. The Eagles won a school record 21 matches in 2010-11 and 2011-12, finishing 21-5 each year.
 
Bill Hehli is in his 31st season as head coach of the UWL women's and men's teams. Inducted into the UWL Wall of Fame in 2017, Hehli is 476-147 (.764) as the women's head coach. The all-time leader in wins in WIAC history, he has led UWL to four (2003, 2005, 2006, 2025) WIAC women's championships.

The men's squad is 388-237 (.621) under Hehli, who has compiled an overall record of 864-384 (.692) at UWL.
