Men's Track and Field Set for WIAC Outdoor Championships; Look To Defend Conference Title

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track and field team will strive for its 58th title at the 2024 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Outdoor Championship (presented by Culver's) at the two-day meet at UW-Platteville's Track & Field Complex.  The 105th edition of the league meet is scheduled to start Friday, May 3 and run through Saturday, May 4 in unison with the 52nd gathering of the women's teams.

WIAC OUTDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS 
  • Competition at this year's championship will begin at 2:30 p.m. on May 3, and 11:00 a.m. on May 4. Medals will be awarded to the top-eight finishers in each of the individual events and runners comprising the top-six relay teams, while All-Conference designation will be given to the top-three finishers in each event.
  • The Eagles have won a conference-leading 57 titles including 31 of the past 32 championships. 
  • UWL won the 2023 WIAC Outdoor Championships with 245 points while UW-Oshkosh was second with 150 points. UW-Whitewater finished third with 124 points, UW-Eau Claire fourth with 88.50, UW-Stout fifth with 78, UW-Platteville sixth with 56, UW-Stevens Point seventh with 45.50 and UW-River Falls eighth with 32.
  • On this weeks NCAA DIII Men's OutdoorTrack & Field National Rating Index distributed by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), three of the top 10 teams are from the WIAC with UW-La Crosse ranked first. UW-Oshkosh is fourth and UW-Eau Claire ninth.

  • The Eagles return four conference champions from the 2023 Outdoor Championships including Chase Doornink (100-meter dash), Ethan Gregg (10,000-meter run), Cael Schoemann (800-meter run) and Luke Schroeder (400-meter hurdles). Gregg (5,000-meter run) and Sam Blaskowski (100-meter dash and 200-meter dash) won WIAC Titles at the WIAC Championships. 
  • Blaskowki comes into the championships tops the WIAC Honor Roll in the 100-meter (10.36) and 200-meter dash (20.82). His time in the 200-meter is the fastest time in the NCAA III so far this season.
  • UWL has the six fastest times in the WIAC in the 400 meters with Collin Conzemius having the top time at 47.20. 
  • Cael Schoemann ranks a top the 800 meter run (1:49.60) while UWL has the top two times in the 1500-meter run led by Michael Madoch (3:47.27) and Jayden Zywicki (3:49.23). 
  • The Eagles also have the top times in the WIAC in the 10,000-meter run in Isaac Wegner (29.37.17) and Corey Fairchild (29:45.62). 
  • In both of the hurdle events, UWL has ran the fastest times in the WIAC with Luke Schroeder (14.24) atop the 110 hurdles and Dirk Lueck (52.68) atop the 400 hurdles.
  • In the 3,000-meter Steeplechase, Adam Loenser set a school record with a time of 8:44.88 which ranks second in both the WIAC and the NCAA III. 
  • In both relays (4x100 and 4x400), UWL has the fastest times including an NCAA III best 40.14 in the 4x100.

    IN THE FIELD
  • Nathan Andringa will look to defend his 2023 Outdoor WIAC title in the high jump as he comes into this year's championship with a WIAC best 6-9.
  • The top three marks in the WIAC in the pole vault so far this season have come from the Eagles. Andrew Tumminaro and JT Zell lead the way with a mark of 15-11 3/4.
JOSH BUCHHOLTZ
  • Coach Buchholtz is in his 16th season as UWL's head coach.
  • The Eagles have won the WIAC Outdoor Championships 14 times under Buchholtz. 
  • Buchholtz led the Eagles to the 2024 NCAA Indoor Championships which was the Eagles sixth indoor national title under Buchholtz (2009, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2023).
