Eagles In Third Place After Day One; Schmitt and Matthai's Earn All-America Honors

Geneva, Ohio - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track and field team is in third place after the first day of action at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Outdoor Championships Thursday at SPIRE Institute.

2025 NCAA III OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIP BASICS
  • Team Results - UWL is third place with 11 points. Leading the Championships is UW-Oshkosh with 24 points while UW-Eau Claire is in second with 12 points followed by North Central (Ill.) and Wheaton (Mass.)  who are tied with 10 points in fourth place.  
  • Location - SPIRE Institute, Geneva, Ohio.(hosted by The North Coast Athletic Conference and the Greater Cleveland Sports Commission)
  • UWL at NCAA III Championships - UWL has won an NCAA Division III record 16 Outdoor Championships. The Eagles are attempting to defend their 2024 National Title. 
  • Up Next: Day two of the Championships gets underway at 10:00 a.m (EST) Friday morning.

  • Long Jump (Final) - Triton Schmidt earns his first NCAA III Outdoor All-American honor as he finished seventh with a jump of 23-6.

    Track Events
  • 4x100 Relay (Prelims) - With a time of 39.77, the 4x100 meter relay team of Ryder Smith, Sam Blaskowski, Evan Maurud and Lyndon Hemmrich-Hartman qualified for Saturday's finals with the fastest time. The Eagles were one of just two qualifiers to run a sub 40 time. 
  • 200 Meter Dash (Prelims) - Blaskowski qualified for the 200-meter dash finals on Saturday with a time of 20.56. Blaskowski is attempting to defend his 2024 NCAA III National title and earn his third All-America honor in the 200-meter dash. 
  • 3000 Meter Steeplechase (Prelims) -  UWL will be represented by four Eagles in the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday led by Adam Loenser who had the fastest qualifying time on Thursday (8:51.85). Joining Loenser in the finals will be Jayden Zywicki (8:55.41), Joey Sullivan (8:59.26) and Charles Vater (8:59.98).
  • 4x400 Relay (Prelims) - The 4x400 relay team of Andrew Hackbarth, Tyler Backes, Jacob Hohmann and Devin Williams qualified for the finals on Saturday with a time of 3:11.10.
  • 10000 Meter Run (Finals) - Grant Matthai (29:28.23) and Aidan Matthai (29:32.93) both earned NCAA All-America honors as they finished fourth and fifth respectively. The All-American honor is the first for both Matthai's in the 10000-meter run.
