Three New Additions to UWL Coaching Staffs Announced

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Intercollegiate Athletics Department has announced the addition of three new assistant coaches. Victoria McCarty has been named the assistant volleyball coach, Peter Nycz has been named men's basketball assistant coach while Angel Allen will join the women's basketball program full-time.

Victoria McCarty

McCarty comes to UWL after serving the last two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Western Illinois University. 

During McCarty's time at Western Illinois, the Leathernecks compiled a 9-30 overall record. While on court coaching during practices and games was a primary role, McCarty also helped oversee all team travel/meals, video exchange and recruit visits. 

Off the court at Western Illinois, McCarty served the athletic department as an athletic academic advisor. In this role, she provided direct assistance in helping students develop an academic plan for success. She served on multiple committees including Title IX, Women in Leadership and the Student Athlete Advisory Committee. 

Prior to joining the coaching world, McCarty had a four year intercollegiate volleyball playing career that included two years (2019-20) at Quincy University (Ill.) and two years (2017-18) at Yavapai College (Ariz.). In her years at Quincy (Ill.), McCarty played in 32 matches where she was a defensive specialist. At Yavapi (Ariz.), McCarty played in 55 matches and recorded 756 digs and 83 assists. 

McCarty will also serve as an athletics special assistant for the Eagles' athletic department.

Peter Nycz

Nycz joins the Eagles' men's basketball program after serving as an assistant coach at Bryant & Stratton College (Wis.) the past three seasons under current UWL Head Coach JT Gritzmacher.

While at Bryant & Stratton (Wis.), the Bobcats compiled a 57-30 overall record including winning a single-season school record 26 games this past season. In his final season, the Bobcats spent time ranked in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Top 20 including finishing the season ranked 17th. The 2022-23 season saw the Bobcats advance to the NJCAA Region IV Championship where they fell 77-73 to Waubonsee Community College (Ill.).

At Bryant & Stratton (Wis.), Nycz was involved in all facets of the program including assisting with building practice plans, on court game coaching, and organizing all team travel. Off the court he oversaw and implemented a strength and conditioning program, managed the program's social media accounts and organized team study halls. 

Before joining the Bobcats staff, Nycz taught physical education at West Allis Central High School (Wis.) where he also served as the head varsity softball coach and assistant coach for both the boys' basketball and football programs.

Angel Allen

Allen is very familiar with the Eagles' women's basketball program as she has been a part-time assistant the past two seasons while also serving the university as an admissions counselor. Allen will now focus her full-time on coaching under new UWL Head Coach Moran Lonning.

In her first two seasons, the Eagles are 33-19 overall and 13-14 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). Last season, the Eagles' 19 wins was their most wins since the 2019-20 season. UWL has qualified for the WIAC Tournament seven straight seasons. 

Allen came to UWL after serving as head of basketball operations and Co-Founder of A-Level Athletics in Knoxville, Tennessee and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil since January 2021.  Allen was also head coach of the 14U Girls Basketball team for B Maze Elite in Knoxville since October 2020. 

Allen was head girls' varsity basketball coach at Concord Christian School in Knoxville from August 2020-April 2021 and served as an assistant women's basketball coach at Roane State Community College in Harriman, Tennessee from June 2019-March 2020.  

Prior to getting into coaching, Allen played in 119 games, making 65 starts at Western Carolina University (North Carolina).
