Box Score 2 West Salem, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team shut out UW-Stout twice Saturday afternoon at West Salem High School. UWL won game one 9-0 in five innings and game two 9-0 in six innings. The wins improve the Eagles to 18-11 overall and 3-3 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action while the Blue Devils fall to 7-20 on the year and 1-5 in the WIAC.
Kyra Lard hit her fifth home run of the year.
In game one, the two teams would struggle to get any offense going as the game entered the third inning scoreless.
Hailey Jibben led off the third inning with a walk and advanced to second on a bunt single by
Megan Scheidt.
Abbey Bosch moved the two runners up with a sacrifice bunt.
Kyra Lard then singled to score both Jibben and Scheidt to give UWL a 2-0 lead.
Jordyn McCormack followed with her sixth home run of the season to make it 4-0.
Then with one out in the fourth inning,
Jordan Schultz singled and stole second. Jibben walked while Scheid's bunt singled loaded the bases. Bosch doubled to clear the bases and give the Eagles a 7-0 lead. Lard and McCormack both walked to load the bases for the second time in the inning. After
Marissa Pease reached on a fielder's choice with Bosch out at home on the play,
Madi O'Brien and
Anna Jensen both walked to force in both Lard and McCormack to make it 9-0.
Starting pitcher
Elise Weinzierl (8-6) retired the side in order in the fifth inning to seal the complete-game shut out for the Eagles. Weinzierl gave up a hit and a walk in the second inning along with a hit-by-pitch in the third inning but that would be the only bases runners of the game for the Blue Devils. Weinzierl finished the contest with nine strikeouts.
Elise Weinzierl allowed one hit and struck out nine in the game one win.
As a team, UWL finished with seven hits including two each from Bosch and Scheidt. Bosch finished the game with three RBI while Lard, McCormack, Jibben and Schedit each scored two runs.
Game two saw the the Eagles take a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double from McCormack. The double scored Lard who reached on a single. Then in the second inning,
Jordan Schultz singled and stole second.
Mariah Wick walked and both Schultz and Wick advanced on a passed ball. After Bosch walked to load the bases, Lard singled to score Schultz while McCormack drove in a run by being hit-by-pitch to give UWL a 3-0 lead.
With the score still 3-0 entering the fifth inning, UWL scored twice on two hits to make it 5-0. After a ground out to start the bottom of the fifth, Bosch singled and came around to score on Lard's fifth home run of the season. In the sixth, Lard reached on a fielder's choice with one out and came around to score on McCormack's second double of the game. Pease's double would score McCormack and make it 7-0.
Ella Harris ended the game with her first home run of the season to score Pease and make the score 9-0.
Once again, UWL would get stellar pitching as
Remington Stark and
Ally Eden combined for the ninth no-hitter in school history. It is the first no-hitter since
Lauren Beres threw one against Wartburg College (Iowa) on March 29, 2013. Stark (3-1) pitched 5.0 innings to earn the win, finishing with six strikeouts while Eden pitched 1.0, recording two strikeouts.
Jordyn McCormack went 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI.
Offensively, UWL finished with 10 hits including three from Lard and two from McCormack. They both also finished with three RBI. McCormack reached base safely in all four at-bats including two doubles, a walk and a hit-by-pitch while Lard scored all three times she was on base.
UWL will be back in action on Sunday, April 23 hosting UW-River Falls for a WIAC doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. The games will once again be played at West Salem High School Field due to UWL's field being unplayable due to flooding.
