UWL Falls to UW-Whitewater in WIAC Tournament; Follette Throws Complete-Game; Steien Hits Home Run

Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team fell, 2-1, to UW-Whitewater Friday afternoon in the first round of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament (presented by Culver's) at UW-Oshkosh's Mary Beth Nienhaus Softball Complex.

Carmen Follette allowed two hits in 6.0 innings.

The Eagles, the tournament sixth-seed, finish their season at 23-17 while the third-seeded Warhawks improve to 26-13 and will face second-seeded UW-Platteville on Saturday, May 9 at 1:30 p.m.

UW-Whitewater took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third on Grace Grabowy's home run. UWL's Carmen Follette had retired the first nine batters before the solo home run.

Both teams stranded a runner in the fourth inning. 

UWL tied the game in the top of the sixth on Lindsay Steien's home run to make it 1-1. The Warhawks took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Bella Eggert walked with one out. After a pop-out, Dani Peshia singled to move Eggert to third, who then scored on an Eagles' throwing error to give UW-Whitewater a 2-1 lead.

Marissa Pease singled to lead-off the top of the seventh for UWL, but the next three hitters were retired to end the game.

Follette (10-6) took the loss, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing two hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks while striking out three.

UWL finished with four hits with Steien going 2-for-2 with the home run and walk.

Josie Hammen (13-4) earned the win for UW-Whitewater, going 7.0 innings, allowing four hits, one run and one walk with eight strikeouts.
