Box Score 2 Leesburg, Fla. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team picked up two more wins on their final day of their spring break trip in Florida as they defeated The University of Southern Maine 8-3 and Farmingdale State College (N.Y.) 7-3. The Eagles finish the spring break portion of their schedule 10-3 and are now 12-5 overall.
In the win against the Huskies of Southern Maine, the Eagle took a 4-0 lead in the first two innings.
Hailey Jibben drove in the first run of the game with a double that scored
Jordyn McCormack who had also reached on a double. In the second inning,
Anna Jensen doubled and scored on a fielder's choice bunt by
Maddie Dokey.
Megan Scheidt then reached on an error and both her and Dokey then advanced to second and third on a pass ball. McCormack then singled to score both Dokey and Scheidt to give the Eagles a 4-0 lead.
UWL added two more runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to extend their lead to 8-0. After Scheidt and
Kyra Lard each singled in the fourth, McCormack and
Kendra Leis each singled to drive in a run a piece. Then in the sixth, Leis singled and advanced to second when Jibben reached on an error. UWL then loaded the bases when
Emily Knight walked. Jensen would then single to drive in the final two runs for the Eagles.
The Huskies would then score three runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut their deficit to 8-3. However, UWL pitcher
Elise Weinzierl would retire all three batters she faced in the seventh to seal the win for the Eagles.
After recording 15 hits in their win yesterday versus William Patterson University (N.J.), the Eagles finished today's game with 13 hits. McCormack (three hits), Leis (two hits), Jibben (two hits) and Jensen (two hits) each had multi hit performances for the Eagles. McCormack drove in three runs while Jensen had two RBI's and Leis/Jibben each had one RBI.
Weinzierl (6-1) pitched her fourth complete game of the season as she allowed three runs on six hits while striking out a career high ten batters. The ten strikeouts are the most by an Eagle since
Caitlyn Hughes had ten strikeouts against UW-Stout on April 20
th, 2019.
Then in the win against Farmingdale State College, Lard led off the first inning with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. She would then score on a ground out by Jibben for the 1-0 lead. The Eagles would add to their lead (3-0) by scoring two runs in the third inning. McCormack led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a single by Leis. A sacrifice fly would score McCormack while
Emily Lyman, who pinch ran for Leis, scored on a single by
Hannah Lalk.
The Rams would tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth inning. After loading the bases, Priscilla Rivera reached on an error that scored in three runs for the Rams. The Eagles took the lead back in the bottom of the fifth when
Lauren Winkler drove in a run with a single.
Then in the sixth inning, Scheidt led off with a bunt single and stole second base. Lard then hit her third home run of the season to make the score 6-3. McCormack followed that with a double and advanced to third on a single by Leis.
Mariah Wick then drove in McCormack for the final run of the game when she reached on a fielder's choice. Maddi Lee would then retire the side in the top of the seventh inning to seal the win for the Eagles.
For the fourth game in their last five, the Eagles finished with double digit hits as they had 11 against the Rams. Leis (three hits), Lard (two hits), McCormack (two hits) and Winkler (two hits) all finished with multi-hit games for the Eagles. Lard also scored two runs and drove in two runs while Jibben finished with two RBI's and McCormack scored two runs.
Lee (2-1) came on in relief in the fourth inning to pitch the final 3.1 innings to earn the win for the Eagles. Lee allowed just one hit while striking out two and walking none.
Ally Eden started the game for the for the Eagles going three innings and allowing no runs on three hits and a walk. Julia Pastrana (0-1) suffered the loss for the Rams as she allowed seven runs on eleven hits and three walks.
UWL will return to action on Tuesday, March 30
th when they host Viterbo University for an exhibition doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 P.M.
