Eight Wrestlers Advance at NCAA III Regional, Five in Semifinals

 The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team is in second-place after the first day of action at the 2022 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Upper Midwest Regional Friday in McPhee Physical Education Center at UW-Eau Claire. The Eagles have 83 points while Augsburg University (Minn.) leads with 86. Regional host, UW-Eau Claire, is in third-place with 76 points. A total of 18 teams are competing.

Eight of 10 wrestlers for UWL advanced to Saturday's action, including five in the semifinals. Brandon Murphy (125-pounds), Nolan Hertel (157), Seth Brossard (165), Kalyn Jahn (184) and Ben Kawczynski (285) each advanced to the semifinals by going 2-0 on Friday. 

Sawyer Sarbacker (133), Jake Mandt (149) and Isaac Gust (174) also advanced to Saturday. 

Murphy (125) advanced in the first round with a technical fall (18-3, 3:14) over Brody Piercy of Pacific University (Ore.). He then defeated Luc Valdez of UW-Oshkosh 4-1 to advance to a semifinal match against Derek Steele (Augsburg University, Minn.) on Saturday.

Sarbacker went 2-1 at 133-pounds, winning his first match by fall (4:31) over Skyler Pike of Aurora University (Ill.) before falling to Ty Bisek of Concordia College, Moorhead (Minn.) by decision (1-0). He earned his second fall (1:45) over Sebastian Rosales of Carthage College (Wis.) of the day to advance to the third round of the consolation bracket. 

Tyler Shackle (141) was eliminated today after going 1-2. He won his first match by fall (1:40) over Aidan Lybarger of Pacific (Ore.) before falling to Zach Sato of UW-Eau Claire by decision (7-6). In his third match of the day, Shackle fell to Dakarai Clay of UW-Whitewater by decision (6-4).

At 149, Mandt won his first match by fall (4:07) over K'den McMullin of Pacific (Ore.). He dropped his quarterfinal match by decision (6-0) to UW-Eau Claire's Jake Drexler before defeating Lucas Regnier of Concordia University Wisconsin by major decision (12-3). 

Hertel (157) advanced to the semifinals with two victories on day one. In his first win, Hertel won by fall (2:31) over Max Sanderfoot of Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.). Then in his second match, Hertel advanced by major decision (11-2) over Nate Stokhaug of UW-Oshkosh. Like Hertel, Brossard went 2-0 with both matches decided by falls. Brossard advanced over Shane Piper (1:57) of UW-Whitewater and Caele Manley (3:00) from Wheaton College (Ill.). 

At 174, Gust went 2-1 including a win in his first match by fall over Kobe Gilbert (4:25) from Carthage (Wis.). In his second match, Gust lost 12-5 to Solomon Nielsen of Augsburg (Minn.) before defeating Stephen Watson of Wheaton (Ill.) by fall (3:40).

Jahn advanced to the semifinal round at 184-pounds after winning his first two matches of the tournament. Jahn won by technical fall (17-0, 2:10) over Isaac Urbina of Pacific (Ore.) and by fall (2:21) over Christian Komitas of Aurora University (Ill.). 

Marcus Orlandoni saw his season come to an end at 197-pounds as he went 1-2 on the day. He lost his first match, 6-5, to Chad Richards of UW-Whitewater before defeating Jack Horihan of MSOE (Wis.) by decision (3-2). Orlandoni lost 12-5 to Jackson Punzel of Wheaton (Ill.). 

Kawczynski became the fifth Eagle to advance to the semifinals as he won both of his matches at 285. He defeated Elijah Olson of the University of Chicago (Ill.) by fall (4:25) and Brett Shoenherr of UW-Platteville by major decision (8-0).

Thirty wrestlers, the top-three finishers in each of the 10 weight classes at the Upper Midwest Regional, advance to the 2022 NCAA Division III Championships scheduled for March 11-12 at the Alliant Energy Powerhouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
