Decorah, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team competed at the Luther College (Iowa) Open Saturday. No team scores were recorded.
The Eagles had a pair of individual champions on Saturday with
Ryland Schneider (165-pounds) and
Tate Flege (184).
Schneider finished 5-0 in the tournament. He opened with a decision (7-4) over Bo Koedam of Coe College (Iowa) before a decision (8-1) over Syler Zdanczewicz of Wartburg College (Iowa) in the second round. Schneider won by technical fall (16-0) over North Iowa Area Community College's Logan Straub in the quarterfinals and advanced to the title match with a technical fall (15-0) over UW-Whitewater's Cal Kirchner in the semifinals. He won the title with a major decision (14-2) over Colton Loween of Ausburg University (Minn.).
Ryland Schneider
Flege went 4-0 to capture the 184-pound division. After a first round bye, he won by fall (2:01) over Cal Ries of UW-Platteville in the second round and by major decision (10-0) over Zak McPhee of UW-Eau Claire in the quarterfinals. Flege won by decision (1-0) over Dominic Mann of St. Cloud State University (Minn.) in the semifinals and won the title with a decision (2-1) over Brandt Bombard of Augsburg (Minn.).
The Eagles'
Henry VanderHeiden (285) placed second on Saturday. He won by fall (1:45) over Ethan Peper of Luther College (Iowa) in the first round and by fall (5:00) over Jose DelToro of Upper Iowa University in the second round. VanderHeiden won by decision (2-0) over Chris Wrage of Loras College (Iowa) in the semifinals, but lost by decision (2-0) to Keegan Kuball of Augsburg (Minn.) in the championship match.
Eleven other wrestlers placed on Saturday.
Quintin Wolbert (125) and
Mycah Beckett (141) each finished third with Wolbert going 4-0 with one win by fall and Beckett finishing 4-1. Wolbert had an injury default in the tournament.
Grant Madl (125) and
Kolt Knaack (157) were fourth while
Eddie Simes (174) and
Carter Lueck (197) were fifth. Madl finished 3-1 on the day with two falls while Knaack went 3-2 with one win by fall. Simes and Lueck each went 5-1 with Lueck earning one win by fall.
Teague Holzer (133),
Talan Schutte (141) and
Tanner Gerber (165) were sixth on Saturday as Holzer and Schutte each finished 3-2 and Gerber 5-1. Gerber earned three wins by fall. The Eagles'
Cole Gentsch (125) and Markos Mihalopoulous (285) were eighth. Gentsch went 4-2 with two wins by fall while Mihalopoulous finishing 2-2 with one fall.
UWL's
Aidan Baum (149) went 4-1 on Saturday while
Brady Dorshorst (157) finished 3-2. Six wrestlers went 2-2 in the tournament, including
Roman McKinney (125),
Wyatt Magolski (133),
Marcus McIntyre (141),
Austin Herbst (141),
Joe Penchi (149) and
Kash Macumber (184). Penchi and Herbst each earned one win by fall.
Zane AlObaidi (157) finished 2-1.
The Eagles'
Aiden Slama (125) and
Tyler Dormanen (197) each went 1-1 with Slama earning his victory by fall. UWL's
Kellen Kelly (149) finished 0-2.
UWL returns to action Saturday, November 22 with competition in three events. The Eagles host Luther College (Iowa) in their home opener at 5 p.m. UWL will also compete at the Augsburg University (Minn.) Auggie Open and the Concordia University Wisconsin Invite both at 9 a.m.
