Naperville, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team placed fifth out of 15 teams at the North Central College (Ill.) Invitational Saturday. The Eagles finished with 76.0 team points while Baldwin Wallace College (Ohio) took the team title with 166.0.
UWL had seven wrestlers place in the tournament, including a pair of third-place finishes.
Nick Fetzner was third at 165-pounds with a 4-1 record with a one win by fall. He won by technical fall (15-0) over Caele Manley of Wheaton College (Ill.) in the third-place match.
Isaac Gust
Isaac Gust was third at 184-pounds, going 3-1 with one win by fall. He earned a win by decision (7-6) over North Central's (Ill.) for third-place.
Four wrestlers finished fifth on Saturday.
Julian Purney placed fifth at 133-pounds with a 4-1 record, earning two victories by technical fall and two by fall. He defeated John Asiuras of North Central (Ill.) by fall (4:12) in the consolation semifinals and Brett Blaess of Baldwin-Wallace (Ohio) by fall (:40) for fifth-place.
Noah Leisgang was fifth at 165-pounds, finishing 5-1 in the tournament with two victories by fall. After losing in the quarterfinals, Leisgang won by technical fall (17-0) over Payton Geigner of North Central (Ill.) in the consolation round and by fall (2:49) over Augsburg University's (Minn.) Carl Leuer in the consolation semifinals. He won by decision (5-0) over Augsburg's (Minn.) Connor Thorsten for fifth-place.
Carter Vetsch was also fifth at 174-pounds on Saturday, finishing 5-1. He had three wins by fall, including over Kobe Gilbert of Carthage College (Wis.) in the consolation semifinals (4:30).
Marcus Orlandoni was fifth at 197-pounds with a 4-1 record. He had one win by fall. After dropping his opening match, Orlandoni won five straight. He won by sudden victory (3-1) over Tyler Raway of Augsburg (Minn.) in the consolation fourth round and by sudden victory (6-4) over Nicholas Casad of Wabash College (Ind.) in the consolation semifinals. He won by decision (9-3) over teammate
Logan Stafford in the fifth-place match.
Stafford was sixth at 197-pounds, going 3-2 overall. He won by technical fall (18-3) over Levi Lee of Manchester College (Ind.) in the consolation semifinals before dropping the fifth-place match (9-3) to Orlandoni.
UWL's
Wyatt Simon (174) went 2-1 with both of his wins coming by fall while
Cael Weinzweig (125),
Nolan Paar (174) and
Leo Draveling (174) each finished 1-2. Paar earned his win by fall.
Dawson Dembroski (165) finished 0-2.
