Wrestling Opens Season at RCTC Open; Three Win Titles

Rochester, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team opened its 2021-22 season at the Rochester Community & Technical College (Minn.) Yellowjacket Open Saturday. No team scores were recorded. 

The Eagles had 10 wrestlers place in the tournament, including three champions on Saturday. UWL's Sam Lorenz captured the 141-pound division with a 4-0 record. After receiving a first-round bye, he won by fall (1:38) over Van Schmidt of Nebraska Wesleyan University in the second round. He won by decision (6-2) over Uvsin Zunnbayan of Harper Community College (Minn.) in the quarterfinals and by fall (:50) over Parker Dobrocky of Rochester Community & Technical College (Minn.) in the semifinals. Lorenz won the championship by medical forfeit over Max Schwabe of Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Leo Draveling won the 174-pound title with a 4-0 record. He won by decision (7-3) over Jakob Francksen-Small of the University of Northwestern (Minn.) in the opening round and by major decision (16-4) over Yoshi Sesoko of UW-Eau Claire in the quarterfinals. He won by decision (7-0) over Logan Shramek of RCTC (Minn.) and took the title with a forfeit over Dylan Anderson of Minnesota State, Mankato.  

UWL's Michael Douglas took the 285-pound championship with a 5-0 mark. He won by fall (4:10) over Zavione Wills of Iowa Lakes Community College in the first round and by decision (7-3) over Mason Smid of RCTC (Minn.) in the second round. Douglas won by decision (3-2) over Jose Ramos of Harper Community College (Minn.) in the quarterfinals and advance to the title match with a decison (2-1) over Jacob Rahn of Iowa Lakes Community College. He won the title with a forfeit over teammate Ben Kawczynski

Tyler Goebel (149), Logan Stafford (197) and Kawczynski (285) each placed second on Saturday with all three going 3-1. Goebel earned one win by fall and one by technical fall while Stafford had one win by fall and two by technical fall.  Noah Leisgang (165) and Marcus Orlandoni (197) each finished fourth while Carter Vetsch (184) was fifth and Cole Hansen (157) eighth. Leisgang and Orlandoni went 2-2 with one win by fall while Vetsch finished 4-1 in the tournament with a technical fall.  Hansen went 3-2 with one win by technical fall.

UWL's Cael Weinzweig (125) and Aaron Ragels (285) each went 2-2 in the tournament while Jude Ryan (149) went 0-2. Weinzweig earned one win by fall and one by technical fall while Ragels won each of his matches by fall.

UWL returns to action Friday, November 12 hosting the University of the Ozarks (Ark.) at 7 p.m. in Mitchell Hall. The dual will be part of the Battle of the Bluffs as the University of Wisconsin faces the University of Arkansas Little Rock in an NCAA Division I dual and Upper Iowa University wrestles Ouachita Baptist University (Ark.) in an NCAA Division II dual.
