Box Score St. Paul, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team advanced to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Third Round with a 1-0 double overtime victory over St. Catherine University (Minn.) Sunday afternoon at St. Catherine's Outdoor Field.
The Eagles improve to 16-4-2 on the season while the Wildcats end their season at 15-2-3. Â St. Catherine (Minn.) suffered its first home loss (8-1) of the season Sunday.Â
Sophie Amundson scored her second straight game-winning goal.
With the win, UWL advances to the third round for the third time (2017, 2018, 2021) in school history, all coming under head coach
Jason Murphy. The Eagles advanced to Sunday's second round with a 1-0 victory over Wartburg College (Iowa) in Saturday's opening round. Â UWL is now 6-3-2 in national tournament action.Â
UWL will face Washington University in St. Louis (Mo.) in the third round at a site to determined.Â
UWL finished with three shots in the first half on Sunday while St. Catherine (Minn.) totaled two as both teams recorded one on goal. St. Catherine (Minn.) had the only corner kick in the first half. The Wildcats finished with six shots in the second half and the Eagles four.Â
Both teams had one shot in the first overtime session. Â
Sophie Amundson scored the game-winning goal in the second overtime at 102:05 assisted by Shana MacPhail. The goal came after St. Catherine (Minn.) shot high off a free kick. It was the second straight game-winning goal for Amundson, who scored at 46:43 in Saturday's victory over Wartburg (Iowa). She now has a team-leading 11 goals in 2021.
UWL totaled nine shots Sunday, including seven on goal.
Alexis McMahon had two shots, both coming on goal, while MacPhail and
Ainsley Allan each finished with two shots and one on goal.
St. Catherine (Minn.) finished with 10 shots with seven on goal. Amora Valencia and Lauren Witte each had two shots, both on goal. Sofia Campbell finished with three shots, including one on goal.Â
Quinn Shannon earned her second straight shutout with seven saves. Kate Praetz recorded five saves for the Wildcats.
UWL had seven corner kicks while St. Catherine (Minn.) totaled three.
