Box Score St. Paul, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team fell, 5-0, at third-ranked University of St. Thomas (Minn.) Friday in the second game of its best-of-three series in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Super Regional. The Eagles end their season at 29-20 while the Tommies improve to 43-5 and advance to the NCAA Division III Championships May 23-28 at Suddenlink Field in Tyler, Texas. St. Thomas (Minn.) earned a 4-0 win in Friday's first game.
St. Thomas (Minn.) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first Friday. Kristin McGonigal singled with one out, stole second and advanced to third on a UWL throwing error. She then scored on a Elise Barnes' sacrifice fly. Â
Sydne Shattuck and
Kendra Leis singled to start the bottom of the fourth for UWL and advanced to second and third on
Stephanie Cole's sacrifice bunt, but both runners were stranded as the next two batters were retired.Â
Jenna Beeso's pinch-hit two-out double scored Rachel Suter in the top of the fifth to make it 2-0 for St. Thomas (Minn.). Chase Shortly hit a solo home run in the sixth to give the Tommies a 3-0 lead and added a two-run single in the seventh to finish the scoring.Â
Caitlyn Hughes (16-5) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing five hits, three runs (two earned) and one walk while striking out one.
Maddie Muelken went 1.2 innings, allowing one hit, two runs and two walks.
UWL finished with three hits in the game.Â
Kierstin Anderson-Glass (26-3) earned the shutout victory for St. Thomas (Minn.), going 7.0 innings, allowing three hits. She also pitched the complete-game shutout in the opening win on Friday. The Tommies finished with six hits in the second game Friday with Shortly going 2-for-3 with three RBI.
UWL was playing in its first NCAA Division III Super Regional after capturing the NCAA Pella, Iowa Regional on May 12 with a pair of wins over Lake Forest College (Ill.). Â
St. Thomas (Minn.), ranked third on last week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), went 3-0 in winning its own regional May 9-11. The Tommies earned a pair of victories (1-0, 6-1) over UW-Eau Claire to win the regional championship. St. Thomas (Minn.) is making its fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Division III Super Regional and fifth in six seasons. The team reached the national finals in 2014 and 2016.Â
