WIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships (Presented by Culver's)
Whitewater, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track and field team leads after the first day of competition at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Championship (Presented by Culver's) hosted at UW-Whitewater's Kachel Fieldhouse. The Eagles, aiming for their 18th straight title, lead with 83.5 points. UW-Eau Claire is second with 45.5 points and UW-Stout third with 41.0.
UW-Oshkosh is fourth (37.0) followed by UW-Platteville (27.0), UW-Whitewater (26.0), UW-Stevens Point (12.0) and UW-River Falls (1.0).
UWL earned a pair of individual titles on Friday as
Jacob Teunas won the long jump (23-6 1/4) and
Thomas Schultz the 5,000-meter run (14:40.22).
The Eagles took the top-three places in the long jump. Along with Teunas winning the title,
Samuel Sadowski placed second (23-5 1/2) and
Cameron Sorenson third (23-2 3/4). UWL had three of the top-four finishers in the 5,000-meter run. After Schultz won the championship,
Tyler Nault finished second (15:00.33) and
Matt Bourland fourth (15:04.41).
Teunas is the first UWL athlete to win the long jump crown since
Dominique Neloms in 2015.
It marks the second straight title for Schultz in the 5,000-meter run. He becomes the first runner since UW-Eau Claire's Tom Breitbach (2011-12) to win back-to-back titles in the event.
Other top finishes in the field events included
Kyle Pulvermacher third (52-4) and
Daniel Graf sixth (50-0 1/2) in the shot put while
Kaleb Schuster finished fifth (15-3 3/4),
Lucas McCormick sixth (14-10) and
Isaac Lock tied for seventh (14-10).
On the track,
Joshua Schraeder was fourth (4:11.70) in the mile run while
Charlie Handrick finishing fourth (49.48),
Will Seeser sixth (49.72) and
Joshua Desorcy eighth (50.32) in the 400-meter dash.
UWL's distance medley relay of
Samuel Hinz, Handrick,
Brian Hansford and Schraeder were fourth (10:29.22).
Noah Meeteer is in second-place in the heptathlon with 2,838 points while
Ben Jones is seventh with 2,589. Lock is in 12th-place (2,406) and
Dom Smith in 15th (2,244).
In preliminary track action,
Josh Koenecke (6.89),
Seth Holden (6.91) and
Troy DeBruin (7.00) advanced to Saturday's 60-meter dash final while
Michael Austin Bates (8.21) advanced in the 60-meter hurdles.
