Box Score Waverly, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 3-2 overtime victory at Wartburg College (Iowa) Sunday afternoon. With the victory, the Eagles even the all-time series with the Knights, 4-4-1. Wartburg (Iowa) falls to 2-1 on the season with Sunday's loss.
Each team tallied two goals in the first half. UWL's
Natalie Herzog got the scoring started with an unassisted goal at 4:03 off a rebound shot to give the Eagles a 1-0 advantage. Wartburg (Iowa) came back to score the next two goals to take a 2-1 lead as Kerri Golinghorst scored off a Brittany Frush corner kick at 18:32 to tie the match at 1-1. Frush then connected at 26:03 assisted by Alyssa Hewiett to give the Knights a 2-1 advantage.
The Eagles tied the match at 2-2 with Maddie Edmark scoring with an assist from
Maddie Granos at 39:24.
After a scoreless second half, UWL's
Alex Cording scored assisted by Edmark at 94:33 to give the Eagles the 3-2 victory.
"Credit to Wartburg, they were able to make it very difficult for us today," said UWL head coach
Jason Murphy. "They forced our defenders to work out a few issues. We were able to get into halftime tied after we did not play very well. After halftime, we were much better and moved the ball well."
UWL finished with 11 shots Sunday, including eight on goal. Cording and
Cassie Handrick each had two shots on goal. Wartburg (Iowa) recorded 22 shots, including 17 on goal. Frush had a match-high seven shots, including five on goal, while Morgan Finch finished with three shots, all coming on goal.
Kennedy Brault recorded 15 saves for UWL while Beth Crow totaled four for Wartburg (Iowa). The Knights also had one team save.
The Eagles earned their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Luther College (Iowa) Friday night in Decorah. "This trip to Iowa was a great weekend for us," said Murphy. "We got two good results and grew tremendously as a team, on and off the field."
UWL returns to action Wednesday, September 9 hosting the University of Dubuque (Iowa) at 7 p.m.
