Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team earned a 2-1 double overtime victory over Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) Saturday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles improve to 3-2 on the season while the Gusties drop to 0-3-1. UWL now leads the all-time series, 5-1-1.
After a scoreless first half featuring 15 total shots, Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) took a 1-0 lead at 46:30 as Maddison Ackiss scored on a penalty kick. It was her second goal of the season. UWL quickly responded to tie the match at 1-1 as
Margaret Harings scored at 52:06 with an assist from
Alex Cording. It was Harings first goal of her collegiate career.
Each team had its scoring chances in regulation, but the match remained tied 1-1 heading into the first overtime. The Gusties' Jana Elliott had her shot at 98:47 saved by the Eagles'
Kennedy Brault while UWL's
Cassie Handrick's shot at 99:57 went high as the teams went to a second extra session.
Brault made a save on an Elliott shot at 100:27 and Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) goalkeeper Ashley Becker saved a shot from UWL's
Kara Bednarek at 102:22. The Eagles scored the winning goal at 104:32 as Handrick notched her first collegiate goal assisted by Cording and
Natalie Herzog.
"Cassie was able to get behind a little bit off a nice ball and had a nice post finish," said UWL head coach
Jason Murphy on the winning goal.
UWL finished with 16 shots Saturday, including nine on goal. Harings and Cording each had two shots on goal. Cording finished with two assists.
Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) registered 20 shots, including 11 on goal. Elliott and Coursey Edwards each finished with three shots on goal.
Brault made 10 saves for the Eagles while Becker finished with seven for the Gusties.
"Kennedy (Brault) has really done a good job for us," said Murphy. "We're really excited about her future and she really came up big for us with a save in overtime. She's played well for us this year."
UWL has played three overtime matches in its first five contests in 2015 with all five matches decided by one goal. "We're really young and we have some growing pains we've gone through," said Murphy. "We've played five quality teams with all going down to the end. We're excited where we are at right now."
UWL returns to action Wednesday, September 16 hosting Carthage College (Wis.) at 4 p.m.
