Box Score 2 Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team remained undefeated in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play with a doubleheader sweep at UW-Platteville Thursday afternoon. The Eagles took the opener, 11-10, and the nightcap, 6-1. UW-L, receiving votes on this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top-25 Poll, improves to 21-7 overall and 6-0 in the WIAC while UW-Platteville falls to 9-21 overall and 0-8 in the conference. It marks the eighth straight season UW-L has won at least 20 games. It is also the first 6-0 start in league play for the Eagles since finishing 16-0 in 2010.
In Thursday's opener, UW-L scored four unearned runs in the top of the first. The first two batters,
Greta Gumness and
Emily Holldorf reached on UW-Platteville errors. After a groundout for the first out of the inning moved both runners up a base, UW-L's
Emilie Wiltzius hit a three-run home run to make it 3-0.
Kendra Brown later added a solo home run to give the Eagles a 4-0 advantage. UW-Platteville cut the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the first as Lisa Karau scored on Haley Salazar's single.
UW-L, winners of 10 of its last 11 games overall, added to its lead with three runs in the top of the second.
Megan Nelson had a two-run single and
Alecia Faber had an RBI single to make it 7-1.
Kelli Anderson hit a solo home run in the top of third inning to give UW-L a 8-1 lead.
The Pioneers cut the deficit to 8-4 with three runs in the bottom of the third with Chelsey Walker walking with the bases-loaded and Katie Huss adding a two-run single. The Eagles came back to score three runs on two hits and four Pioneers' errors in the top of the fifth to make it 11-4. Nelson had an RBI single.
UW-Platteville tallied six runs on six hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 11-10. Karau and Salazar each hit an RBI single to cut the lead to 11-6 while Walker's three-run home run made it 11-9. Crystal Rote followed with a solo home run to cut it to 11-10, but
Katie Klein came in to get the final out of the inning. She then retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh.
Heather Grelle (4-1) earned the win for UW-L, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing seven hits and two strikeouts while Klein picked up her seventh save of the season, going 1.1 innings with one strikeout.
Jessie Carignan started, going 2.2 innings, allowing six hits, four runs (one earned) and one walk while striking out three. The Eagles finished with 16 hits as five players recorded multi-hit contests. Faber and
Brittany Baldwin each had three hits while Nelson, Brown and
Mary Kate Pryor finished with two each. Nelson and Wiltzius had three RBI.
Jess Butzen (3-9) suffered the loss for UW-Platteville, going 2.0 innings, allowing nine hits and eight runs (four earned) with one strikeout. The Pioneers recorded 13 hits as four players had at least two. Salazar finished with three hits while Karau, Ca. Rote and Walker each had two. Walker had four RBI while Salazar and Huss each had two.
In the nightcap, Klein (4-1) earned the complete-game victory. She went 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits, one run and four walks while striking out 10.
UW-L took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with Holldorf scoring on a Wiltzius single. The Eagles added to their lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth on a pair of Pioneers' errors. UW-Platteville cut the deficit to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth on a Shannon Books run-scoring single.
The Eagles added solo runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to finish the scoring.
Sarah Mueller hit a solo home run in the fifth and added an RBI double in the sixth while Wiltzius hit a solo home run in the seventh.
UW-L totaled 10 hits in the nightcap as Wiltzius finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Mueller went 2-for-2 with two RBI and one run while Faber finished 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Keri Treml (3-7) took the loss for UW-Platteville, pitching a complete-game. She threw 7.0 innings, allowing 10 hits, six runs (four earned) and four walks. MJ Patten and Salazar each had two hits for the Pioneers.
UW-L returns to action Friday, April 17 at UW-Superior for a WIAC doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. The doubleheader was moved from Sunday, April 19 due to the weather forecast in Superior.
