UW-L Ties for Second at Wartburg Select

Waverly, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's track & field team opened its 2011 outdoor season in a second-place tie at the Wartburg College Select Saturday afternoon. The Eagles finished with 80 team points. A total of 15 teams competed. 

Wartburg College won the women's title with 160.5 points. Iowa Central and UW-L tied for second (80) while Grand View University (Iowa) was fourth (76) and UW-Eau Claire fifth (70).

UW-L's Kaitlin Genthe was second in the pole vault (10-8) Saturday while Maddison Norlin tied for fourth (9-8). 

Other top finishers in the field events included Hannah Mueller third (18-0 1/4) and Kailey Charlton fifth (17-0 3/4) in the long jump while Kayla Ashland was fourth in the high jump (5-3). Maggie May was sixth in the triple jump (35-7 1/4) while Megan Nitka finished sixth in the javelin (102-7). 

Leeanne Nowicki was fourth (3,739 points) and Sheila Opelt fifth (3,737) in the heptathlon.

On the track, Charlton finished fourth (12.40) and Caitlin Wippermann fifth (12.58) in the 100-meter dash.

The Eagles' 4x400-meter relay of Wippermann, Rebecca Scheuermann, Jenna Halvorson and Laurel Beck finished third (3:57.48) while Charlton, Mueller, May and Beck were sixth (50.32).

Wippermann was also fifth (25.90) in the 200-meter dash Saturday. 

UW-L's Karyn Genrich finished fifth (12:20.48) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase while Rachel Schroeder was sixth (18:47.23) in the 5,000-meter run.

UW-L returns to action Saturday, April 9 at UW-Platteville Invitational at 11 a.m.
