Eagles win 60th WIAC Outdoor Championship

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track & field team captured the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Outdoor Championship (presented by Culver's) Saturday afternoon. It is the Eagles league record 60th conference title in program history and 33rd in 34 years.

THE BASICS
  • Team Results: UWL won with 335 points while UW-Oshkosh was second with 129 points. In third place was UW-Eau Claire with 93 points while UW-Platteville finished fourth (73 points), UW-Whitewater fifth (66 points), UW-Stevens Point sixth (54 points), UW-Stout seventh (53 points) and UW-River Falls eighth (16 points). 
  • Location: Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex, La Crosse, Wis. (hosted by UW-La Crosse)
  • Up next: Prior to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Outdoor Championship May 21-23, UWL will host two NCAA Qualifiers with the first one being Friday, May 8 and the final one on Thursday, May 14.

THE RESULTS

    FIELD EVENTS
  • Discus: Winning his first WIAC Outdoor title in the discus was Anthony Staryszak with a throw of 181-0. Staryszak's mark is a season best so far in the WIAC and ranks third in NCAA III. Also scoring for the Eagles was Ben Youngworth as he finished sixth overall with a throw of 161-8. 
  • Triple Jump: UWL had four individuals finish on the podium led by event winner Carter Pearson with a jump of 48-3 1/4 for his first WIAC Outdoor championship. In third place was Christian Crumbaker with a mark of 47-5 1/4 while Gavin Sargeant was fifth (46-6) and Gabe Olsen seventh (46-3 1/4). 
  • High Jump: With a WIAC best jump of 6-9 1/2, Mitchell Eldredge won his first WIAC title in the high jump. 
  • Shot Put: Winning his fist WIAC Outdoor title in the shot put was Jake Gardner with a throw of 57-6 1/2. Also scoring points for the Eagles was Spencer Prats in sixth place with a mark of 52-4 3/4. 
  • Decathlon: With 6,734 points, Nolan Seaberg finished third in the decathlon while Trent Backeberg was fifth (6,559 points).

TRACK EVENTS 
  • 4x100 Relay - The relay team of Caeden Oppold, Evan Maurud, Landon Gallun and Ryder Smith finished second in the 4x100 relay with a time of 40.35. 
  • 1500-meter Run - The Eagles took home four of the top five spots in the 1500-meter run including event champion Jayden Zywicki with a time of 3:47.29. Zywicki is the first Eagle since 2015 to win a WIAC Title in the 1500-meter run. In second place was Nico Castellanos (3:52.19) while Aidan Manning was third (3:52.41) and Aiden Jakubic (3:54.48) finished fifth. 
  • 110-meter Hurdles - With an NCAA III national record time of 13.32, Luke Schroeder wins his second WIAC Championship in the 110-meter hurdles. Schroeder also won title in 2024. Teammate Aaron Peolma finished fourth overall with a time of 14.19. 
  • 400-meter dash- Collin Conzemius wins his third consecutive WIAC Title in the 400-meter dash with an NCAA III season best time of 46.74. Finishing right behind Conzemius was teamate Devin Williams with a time of 47.14 while Andrew Hackbarth was fourth (48.40). 
  • 100-meter Dash - Schroeder follows up his 110-meter hurdle performance with a second place performance in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.25. Also scoring for the Eagles was Maurud in fourth place (10.45) and Gallun in fifth place (10.47). 
  • 800-meter Run - Cael Schoemann became the first runner in WIAC history to win four consecutive titles in the 800-meter run as he finished with a championship record time of 1:49.03. Finishing right behind Schoemann was Tyler Heiman in second place with a time of 1:52.35. 
  • 400-meter Hurdles - Two Eagles finished in the top three in the 400-meter hurdles including Finn Patenaude in second (51.99) and Zachary Nyquist third (52.69). 
  • 200-meter Dash - Schroeder won his second WIAC Championship of the day as he won the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.13. Also finishing on the podium for the Eagles was Oppold in fifth (22.05) and Gallun seventh (22.14). 
  • 5000-meter Run - UWL had the top four finishers in the 5000-meter run and a fifth finish seventh. With a WIAC Championship record time of 14:11.49, Charles Vater won his first WIAC Title. Right behind Vater was Owen Clark in second (14:12.98), Aidan Matthai in third (14:20.38) and Joey Sullivan in fourth (14:22.65). Finishing seventh overall was Isaac Ewing with a time of 14:43.89. 
  • 4x400-meter Relay - The relay team of Patenaude, Williams, Jacye Kiehne and Logan Hicks finished fourth with a time of 3:14.70.
