River Falls, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team had its three-game winning streak snapped a with 17-10 loss at UW-River Falls Wednesday night at Ramer Field.
The Eagles drop to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Falcons improve to 10-2 overall and 3-0 in the WIAC.
The game served as the 2nd Annual Bird Bowl between the teams. The Eagles and Falcons joined forced to raise funds to support Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation's (PCRF) LaCROSSEe Out Cancer. UWL earned a 14-13 home victory last season.
UWL outscored UW-River Falls, 5-2, in the first quarter on Wednesday.
Evie Brilz started the scoring at 13:25 off
Tori Katzenmeyer's assist. After UW-River Falls' Natasha Berthiaume tied the game at 1-1 with 13:02 remaining on Samantha Hayek's assist, UWL scored three straight goals to take a 4-1 lead. Brilz scored at 11:45,
Ava Schiltz and 8:25 and
Megan Maloney at 6:47. Hayek scored a man-up goal with 4:01 remaining to cut the lead to 4-2, but Katzenmeyer scored with 2:09 left to make it 5-2.
The Falcons outscored the Eagles, 7-1, in the second quarter. Elizabeth Clough, Macy Patton and Avery Watzke scored the first three goals of the quarter to force a 5-5 tie. Katzenmeyer scored a man-up goal with 9:19 remaining to give UWL a 6-5 advantage.
UW-River Falls scored the last four goals of the quarter to take a 9-6 halftime lead. Murphi Specht and Clough each scored once while Hayek scored twice.
UW-River Falls scored all five of the game's goals in the third quarter with Watzke and Specht each scoring twice. Patton also scored in the quarter as the Falcons took a 14-6 lead after three quarters.
Hayek opened the scoring in the fourth quarter at 12:48 to take a 15-6 lead. Maloney cut the deficit to 15-7 with 11:59 remaining. Watzke and Clough gave UW-River Falls a 17-7 lead before UWL tallied the final three goals of the quarter.
Emily Wrobbel scored a pair of goals while Maloney also notched a goal.
UWL finished with 20 shots with 10 coming on goal. Maloney led the Eagles with three goals while Brilz, Katzenmeyer and Wrobbel each scored twice. Schiltz had a game-high seven draw controls.
Stefania Rossi suffered the loss, registering five saves and a team-high five ground balls.
UW-River Falls totaled 35 shots, including 17 on goal. Hayek and Watzke led the Falcons with four goals each while Specht and Clough each had three. Hayek led the team with three assists.
Annelise Rommeck earned the win, recording four saves.
UWL returns to action Friday, April 3 hosting 25th-ranked Colorado College at 1 p.m.
