Clermont, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team swept three games Wednesday as it continued its spring break trip. The Eagles defeated Trinity College (Conn.), 9-1 in five innings, Farmingdale State College (N.Y.), 9-1 in six innings, and SUNY Geneseo, 3-0.
UWL is now 5-4 on the season, extending its winning streak to four.
In the win against Trinity (Conn.), the Bantams started off the scoring with a double from Emily Goddard to score Katie Ruffer in the top of the first. The Eagles bounced back in the first inning with a three-run home run from
Marissa Pease, knocking in
Kasey Brouchoud and
Lindsay Steien. UWL continued scoring in the second inning as
Brooke Howard's double scored Steien and
Chloe Brown. Brouchoud reached first on an error with Howard scoring.
Laci Heppell's single knocked in Pease and
Carly Gross.
Josie Flom was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to score Pease with the game's final run in the bottom of the fourth.
Bree Holmes earned the win, pitching 2.2 innings, giving up one hit with strikeouts.
Claire Springer started, going 2.1 innings, allowing three hits and one run with two strikeouts.
Pease went 2-for-2 with a three-run home run while Howard and Heppell also finished 2-for-2. Heppell had two RBI.
Heather Roth took the loss for the Bantams, pitching 2.0 innings, giving up six hits and eight runs. Zofia Sargent pitched 2.0 innings, allowing two hits and one run.
In the win against Farmingdale State (N.Y.), UWL started off the scoring in the top of the first when Brouchoud doubled to score Steien. Pease's doubled to knock in Brouchoud and Howard.
The Rams bounced back with a score in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch as Ashley Toro scored.
In the fifth, Brouchoud's infield singled knocked in Steien and a Pease double to left scored Fredrixon and Howard. Pease later scored in fifth on a wild pitch. Howard's RBI ground out scored
Amber Gonzalez in the sixth and Brouchoud's singled knocked in Steien.
Kaeley Niemiec earned the win, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing two hits while striking out two.
Brooklynn Bigalke started, going 3.0 innings, giving up two hits and one run with four strikeouts.
Brouchoud went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Steien also finished 3-for-4 with a double and a stolen base while Pease went 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI.
Kiara Kegel took the loss, pitching 4.2 innings, gave up seven runs, and nine hits with one strikeout.
Versus SUNY Geneseo (N.Y.), both teams left runners on base through six singles. In the top of the seventh, UWL's
Chloe Brown advanced to second on the throw from the catcher as Flom stole home and scored the game's first run. Steien then doubled to score Brown for a 2-0 lead and Brouchoud's sacrifice fly knocked in Gonzalez to make it 3-0.
Carmen Follette earned the complete-game shutout win, pitching all 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits with nine strikeouts.
Mikayla Bucci suffered the loss for SUNY Geneseo, also pitching 7.0 innings while allowing seven hits and three runs with five strikeouts.
Steien led UWL, going 2-for-4 with a double and RBI.
UWL returns to action Thursday, March 19 against McDaniel College (Md.) at 8 a.m. (Central) and William Paterson University (N.J.) at 10:30 a.m. (Central).
