UWL Extends Winning Streak to Seven with Three Victories in Florida; Earns Shutout over Clarkson

Clermont, Fla. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team extended its winning streak to seven with three wins Thursday as it continued its spring break trip. The Eagles, now 8-4 on the season, earned a 10-5 victory over McDaniel College (Md.), a 9-1 win in six innings over William Paterson University (N.J.) and a 8-0 victory in five innings over Clarkson University (N.Y.). UWL and Clarkson (N.Y.) completed its suspended game from March 15.
 
In the win against McDaniel (Md.), the Green Terror started off the scoring with a double from Keonna Gonzalez which scoring Gianna Apostolakos in the top of the first. The Eagles bounced back in the bottom of the first as Kasey Brouchoud hit a single to knock in Lindsay Steien to tie the game at 1-1. Marissa Pease's RBI double scored Brooke Howard to give UWL a 2-1 lead. Laci Heppell's triple and scored Pease and Kasey Brouchoud for a 4-1 lead and Josie Flom's single knocked in Heppell to make it 5-1.
  
McDaniel (Md.) bounced back in the top of the second as Ryan Smith reached first on a fielder's choice to score Emma McPherson. Apostolakos reached on an error with Taylor Applefield coming in to cut the lead to 5-3. Erin Thayer later scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-4.
 
UWL got one of the runs back in the bottom of the second with Brouchard reaching on a McDaniel (Md.) error to score Lindsay Steien and extend the lead to 6-4.
 
Cameron Kelly scored on a Applefield's fielder's choice in the top of the third for the Green Terror to cut it to 6-5. The Eagles tallied two runs in the bottom of the fourth with Steien scoring on Brooke Howard's triple and Howard coming in on a dropped third strike to Brouchard.
 
UWL finished the scoring with a pair of runs in the fifth with Madalynn Frederixon scoring on Amber Gonzalez' RBI groundout and Chloe Brown coming in on Steien's single.
 
Kaeley Niemiec earned the win for UWL, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing three hits and one walk with one strikeout. Brynne Bieri started for the Eagles, going 3.0 innings, allowing five hits, five runs (two earned) and two walks while striking out two.
 
Steien went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Ava Jaehnke went 2-for-3 with a double. Howard scored twice.  
 
Shiloh Wall took the loss for the Green Terror, pitching 3.0 innings, giving up nine hits and eight runs.
 
Versus William Paterson (N.J.), Brooklyn Bigalke earned the complete-game victory. She went 6.0 innings, allowing two hits, one run and two walks with two strikeouts.
 
UWL started off the scoring in the top of first when Pease was walked with the bases loaded to score Gonzalez.  William Paterson (N.J.) would bounce back in the bottom of the first when Hailey Backo's triple scored Brandi Shortway.  
 
The game remained tied until the top of the fourth when Steien's single scored Flom and Brown to make it 3-1. UWL added six runs on five hits in the sixth innings. Steien had an RBI single to make it 4-1 and Brown scored on a passed ball to extend the lead to 5-1. Kasey Brouch and Heppell each had two-run singles to give UWL a 9-1 lead.
 
Gonzalez, Steien, Howard and Brown each had two hits with Steien, Brochoud and Heppell each finishing with two RBI. Gonzalez and Brown scored twice.
 
Aubrey Miller suffered the loss for William Paterson (N.J.), pitching 6.0 innings, allowing 11 hits, nine runs (seven earned) and three walks while striking out five. The Pios were held to two hits.
 
Carmen Follette earned the complete-game win for UWL over Clarkson (N.Y.), pitching 5.0 innings, allowing one hit and one run with four strikeouts.
 
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with Pease's single scoring Steien. UWL added to its lead with three runs in the third on a two-run double from Pease and an RBI triple from Heppell.
 
In the fourth inning, Howard walked with the bases-loaded walk to make it 5-0 and Brouchoud's infield single extended the lead to 6-0. Brown scored on an error and Steien's sacrifice fly to score Gonzalez made it 8-0 in the top of the fifth.
 
Amanda Corrice took the loss for Clarkson (N.Y.). She pitched 3.0 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs and one walk.
 
UWL wraps up its spring trip with a pair of games on Friday, March 20 facing Kalamazoo College (Mich.) at 8 a.m. (Central) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 10:30 a.m. (Central).
