UWL Completes Undefeated WIAC Dual Season with Win at UW-Stevens Point; Extends League Winning Streak to 22

Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team completed its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) dual season with a 41-6 victory over UW-Stevens Point Friday night on Shirley Egner Court at Berg Gym.

The Eagles, ranked sixth in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Dual Rankings for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III, improve to 14-3 overall and 5-0 in the WIAC. The Pointers drop to 5-9 overall and 1-4 in the conference.

UWL extended its WIAC winning streak to 22 with Friday's victory. The Eagles improve to 93-9 (.912) all-time in conference duals under head coach Dave Malecek.

UWL has now recorded eight undefeated (5-0) conference duals seasons in the last 10 years.

The Eagles earned their 23rd straight win over the Pointers in improving their all-time series lead to 48-26.

UW-Stevens Point took a 4-0 lead at 125-pounds as 15th-ranked Luca Paladino won by major decision (10-2) over UWL's Cole Gentsch. UWL took an 11-4 lead as Wyatt Magolski won by injury default (3:00) over George Ahles at 133-pounds and Marcus McIntyre won by technical fall (17-2, 3:30) over Maddox Rye at 141.

The Pointers cut the lead to 11-7 after Riese Thornberry won by decision (5-4) over the Eagles' Aidan Baum at 149.

UWL swept the final six matches to secure the victory. Joe Penchi's technical fall (15-0, 5:59) against Gavin Madson at 157-pounds gave UWL a 16-7 lead. Second-ranked Tanner Gerber followed with a technical fall (16-0, 6:07) over Caden Young at 165 to extend the Eagles' lead to 21-7.

Eddie Simes won by decision (4-2) over 13th-ranked Carson Trotzer at 174-pounds to make it 24-7. UW-Stevens Point was deducted one team point for unsportsmanlike conduct after the 174-pound match.

UWL won the next two matches by fall with second-ranked Tate Flege defeating Easton Hull (2:11) at 184-pounds and eighth-ranked Tyler Dormanen defeating Logan Neitzel (4:14) at 197.

Henry VanderHeiden concluded the dual with a technical fall (15-0, 2:20) over Jack Callen at 285.

UWL returns to action Sunday, February 8 at the University of Dubuque (Iowa) Invite at 10 a.m.
