Mt. Vernon, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team competed at the Cornell College (Iowa) Mike Duroe Invite Saturday. No team scores were recorded.
UWL had 14 wrestlers place in the tournament, including
Eddie Simes who captured the 174-pound title. He went 5-0, opening with three straight technical falls. Simes, ranked fifth in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) won by technical fall (21-6) over Brayden Woods of Luther College (Iowa) in the first round with a technical fall (21-6) over Colton Berg of Wartburg College (Iowa) followed by a technical fall (24-7) over Max Sokolski of Augsburg University (Minn.) in the quarterfinals. He won by sudden victory (4-1) over Hesston Johnson of Wartburg (Iowa) in the semifinals and took the division with a win by decision (5-3) over Nick Alexander of Augsburg (Minn.).
The Eagles'
Cole Gentsch (125-pounds),
Talan Schutte (141) and
Ryland Schneider (165) all placed second with 4-1 records. Gentsch and Schneider each earned one win by fall.
Three wrestlers placed third, including
Wyatt Magolski (133),
Joe Penchi (157) and
Sedeeq AlObaidi (184) each going 5-1 in the tournament.
Marcus McIntyre (141) was fourth with a 4-2 record and two wins by fall.
UWL's
Aiden Slama (125),
Kash Macumber (184) and
Markos Mihalopoulos (285) were fifth overall with 4-2 records. Slama earned one win by fall.
Grant Madl (125) and
Quintin Wolbert (133) each placed sixth with Braedon Dorshorst (157) seventh. Madl went 2-0, but had three medical forfeits after the two victories. Wolbert finished 3-3 and Dorshorst 3-2.
In other results,
Kellen Kelly (149) went 4-2 while
Jack Krier (149) and
Asher Sheldon (285) both finished 3-2. Sheldon earned one win by fall.
Kolt Knaack (157),
Ryan Lexvold (184) and
Henry VanderHeiden finished 12-2 with Lexvold earning one win by fall and VanderHeiden two by fall.
Roman McKinney (125),
Ashton Meister (165),
Landon Odegard (285) and
Caden Weber (285) all went 1-2. McKinney and Meister earned their wins by fall.
