Fourth Quarter Run Sends Eagles Past #4 Ranked UW-Whitewater; Milne Records Double-Double

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team used a hot shooting fourth quarter to upset #4 ranked UW-Whitewater Wednesday night at Mitchell Hall.

Streak Snapped: UWL snaps eight game losing streak to UW-Whitewater. The last time the Eagles had beaten the Warhawks was a 60-49 win on January 12, 2019.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • The Eagles scored on their first two possessions of the game and took an early 6-2 lead (7:27). UWL then scored seven of the next nine points to lead 13-6 with 4:55 remaining in the first quarter. The Warhawks would cut their deficit to 15-11 on a layup by Aleah Grundahl. A turnaround jumper by Schumann would give the Eagles a 17-11 lead before the Warhawks scored the final six point tie the game (17-17) at the end of the first quarter. Kacie Carollo hit a three-pointer with :45 left to tie the score.
  • Kailee Meeker hit back-to-back jumpers to give UWL a 21-17 lead 3:00 minutes into the second quarter. After UWL took a 25-22 lead on a jumper by Ali Sprangers, UW-Whitewater scored five straight to take its first lead of the game at 27-25 with 4:44 left in the half. The Warhawks extended their lead to 35-29 before Milne hit a jumper and Sprangers hit a three-pointer to cut the Eagles deficit to 35-34. UW-Whitewater's Katie Hildebrandt hit a layup as time expired to give the Warhawks a 37-34 lead at the half. 
  • UWL opened the second half with two free throws by Milne and a jumper by Lindsey Knuth to give the Eagles a 38-37 lead. With the score tied at 40, UWL scored seven of the next 10 points to lead 47-43 with 4:49 left in the third quarter. After UW-Whitewater cut their deficit to 52-51, Milne hit a jumper with :09 left in the third quarter to lead 54-51.
  • A Meeker three-pointer would give UWL a 57-53 lead but the Warhawks would get a three-pointer from Carollo to pull them within one (57-56) with 7:52 left in the game. Schumann would hit a step back three-pointer to spark an eight to three run and give UWL a 65-59 lead with 3:14 remaining. UW-Whitewater would not get any closer than five (65-60) the rest of the way as UWL would extend their lead to its largest at 75-62 with 1:17 left in the game. UWL shot five-of-seven from the three-point line and six-of-six from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.

  • Milne records her third double-double of the season as she finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Meeker finished with four three-pointers as she had 20 points to go along with seven rebounds.
  • Also finishing in double figures for the Eagles was Sprangers with 12 points while Schumann added 10 points. 
  • Schumann finished with a game high seven assists. 
  • As a team, the Eagles finished 30-of-65 (46.2%) from the floor including nine-of-22 (40.9%) from behind the three-point line. UWL was also eight-of-eight (100%)from the free throw line. 
  • Grundahl led the Warhawks with a game high 27 points and 12 rebounds while Carollo added 25 points, six rebounds and five assists. 
  • UW-Whitewater shot 23-of-69 (33.3%) from the floor and four-of-21 (19.0%) from the three-point line. The Warhawks were also 16-of-21 (76.2%) from the free throw line.
