Meeker, Milne, Schumann Record Double-Doubles; Eagles Defeat Pioneers

Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team shot 52% from the three-point line to help lead them past UW-Platteville in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match-up Saturday afternoon.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • UW-Platteville scored seven of the first eight points and took an 11-5 lead with 3:32 left in the first quarter. After the Pioneers took a 17-10 lead (0:58) on a jump shot by Ashley Weir, Paige Schumann hit a three-pointer to cut the Eagles deficit to 17-13. Lauren Sparks would make a layup with :06 left in the quarter to give the Pioneers a 19-13 lead. 
  • Two Lauryn Milne free throws and a jump shot from Lindsey Knuth would pull the Eagles to within 19-17 with 8:11 on the clock in the second quarter. The Pioneers would quickly extend their lead back seven as they scored seven of the next nine points to lead 26-19 with 5:56 left in the half. UWL responded with a 20-5 run to take its largest lead of the half at 39-31 with :47 to play in the second quarter. Emma Jossie hit back-to-back three pointers following a three-pointer from Meeker to help spark the Eagles run. Brianna Prieve ended the Eagles run with a three-pointer of her own just before half time to make the first half score 39-34.
  • A Schumann three-pointer early in the third quarter would give the Eagles a 42-36 lead before the Pioneers got four straight free throws from Ella Mackiewicz to make it 42-40 (7:55). After a Milne jumper, Meeker hit a three-pointer followed by back-to-back three pointers from Katie Waukau to spark an 11-0 run to give the Eagles a 53-40 lead with 5:33 left in the quarter. A Brynlee Nelson three-pointer would cut the Pioneers deficit to 57-47 (2:40) but that would be as close as UW-Platteville would get as the Eagles led 61-50 after three quarters of play.
  • UW-Platteville would score six of the first eight points of the fourth quarter to pull the Pioneers within 63-56 with 7:32 remaining in the game. Meeker would then hit a three-pointer and a jumper to quickly extend the Eagles lead back to double digits (68-56). Nelson would score four straight points for the Pioneers to make it 68-60 (4:47) but that would be as close as they would get as Waukau hit a three-pointer followed by two free throws from Milne and a three-pointer by Sprangers to extend UWL's lead to 76-60 with 2:58 remaining. The 16 point lead was the Eagles largest of the game.

  • Three Eagles record double-doubles with Meeker and Milne scoring in double digits and pulling down double digit rebounds while Schumann's double-double came in points and assists. Meeker finished with a team high 17 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Milne finished with a game high 11 rebounds along with 14 points. Schumann finished three-for-three from behind the three-point line as she scored 15 points to go along with a career high 10 assists. 
  • Sprangers also finished with 13 points while Waukau hit three, three-pointers to add nine points off the bench. 
  • UWL shot 27-of-57 from the floor (47.4%) including 13-of-25 (52.0%) from the three-point line. Milne was eight-of-eight to help the Eagles finish 12-of-16 (75%) from the free throw line.
  • Mackiewicz led the Pioneers with 20 points while Sarah Mueller finished with 17 points.
  • Nelson led the Pioneers with six rebounds to go along with 14 points. 
  • The Pioneers finished 24-of-63 (38.1%) from the floor including three-of-20 (15%) from the three-point line. UW-Platteville was also 13-of-17 (76.5%) from the free throw line.
