Moran Lonning

Moran Lonning starts her fourth season as UWL's head women's basketball coach in 2026-27.

2025-2026
  • Led the Eagles to a 21-10 overall record and 9-5 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) record.
  • Eagles captured programs first ever WIAC Tournament Championship with a 52-49 upset win of top seed UW-Oshkosh to earn the WIAC automatic bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III National Tournament. 
  • At the national tournament, UWL defeated LaGrange College (Ga.) 78-52 and Carroll University 80-60 to advance to program's first ever trip to the NCAA III Sweet 16. In the round of 16, UWL defeated Southern Maine University 66-45 to advance to the national quarterfinals where they face top overall seed New York University. The Eagles would fall to New York University 72-47.
  • UWL knocked off #7 UW-Whitewater 77-54 for the Eagles sixth win over a Top-25 team since D3hoops.com first released a poll to start the 1999-2000 season. 
  • Helped coach Malia Nelson to D3hoops.com All-Region Third Team selection. 
  • Nelson and Molly Janke were named to the WIAC All-Conference First Team while Grace Knupp was selected to the WIAC Honorable Mention Team. 
2024-2025
  • UWL finished 17-12 overall and 7-7 in the WIAC. 
  • Eagles earned an at-large bid to the NCAA III National Tournament where they defeated Colorado College 79-52 in the first round. They then fell 50-49 to UW-Whitewater in the second round. 
  • Season included upset wins of #15 UW-Stout and #5 UW-Oshkosh. The win over UW-Oshkosh was just the fourth win over a top five ranked opponent in school history. 
  • Under Lonning's coaching, Lauryn Milne was named D3hoops.com Third Team All-Region and WIAC First Team All-Conference. Milne finished her Eagle career as just the 18th player in school history to surpass the 1,000 point milestone (1,215 points, sixth all-time) and is one of only three Eagles to score more than 1200 points and grab more than 500 rebounds (539). 
  • Kailee Meeker also earned WIAC Honorable Mention All-Conference honors. 
2023-2024
  • In Lonning's first season, UWL finished 13-14 overall and 5-9 in the WIAC. 
  • UWL made the WIAC Tournament and defeated UW-Platteville in the first round before falling to top seed UW-Oshkosh. 
  • Lauryn Milne was named to the WIAC First Team while Kailee Meeker earned all-conference honorable mention honors. Katie Waukau was selected the WIAC Newcomer of the Year
Additional Collegiate Coaching Experience
  • Prior to coming to UWL, Lonning served as the head coach at Central College (Iowa) for one season (2022-23). The Dutch finished that season 8-17 overall and 5-11 in the American Rivers Conference. Also served the college as the Central Athletics Representative for the Building A Culture of Inclusion on campus.
  • Before being named the head coach at Central College, Lonning was an assistant coach at Simpson College (Iowa) from 2016-2022. During her time at Simpson, the Storm won two American Rivers Conference titles. Also at Simpson, Lonning spent six years as the Simpson Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) Co-Leadership Officer. 
Education and Playing Career
  • Earned her bachelors degree in arts, health promotion from Luther College (Iowa) in 2016. 
  • Earned a pair of letters in basketball for the Norse of Luther College (Iowa). She was a two-time Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) Most Valuable Player at Luther (Iowa) in 2014-15 and 2015-16. Lonning was also selected the 2014-15 conference co-defensive player of the year. Named to the 2015-16 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and D3hoops.com Honorable Mention All-America Team, Lonning was the Norse' team captain her senior season. 
  • Prior to Luther College (Iowa), Lonning was a walk-on at the University of Northern Iowa for three years, playing 23 games in 2013-14.
  • She is currently pursuing her her Masters of Arts in Teaching, Leadership and Cultural Competency from the University of Iowa. 
Personal
  • Moran is married to Alex Weber and they are the proud parents of Maxine and the late Charlie (Bubba).
  • Lonning returned to La Crosse following the path of her late father, Greg Lonning, who served as UWL's head wrestling coach from 1992-1998. He compiled a dual record of 77-19, leading the Eagles to their first WIAC title in school history in 1993 while also capturing the crown in 1998. Named the 1993-94 WIAC Coach of the Year, Lonning coached 19 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III All-Americas at UWL. He was an assistant coach for three years at UWL before being named head coach.
  • The connections to UW-La Crosse continue for Moran as her brother, Connor, was a member of the UWL cross country and track & field teams from 2006-10. He earned three All-WIAC First Team honors in cross country, placing fourth in 2007 and 2008 and fifth in 2009.
