UWL Wins Final Eight Matches in WIAC Victory over UW-Whitewater; Earns Tenth Dual Win

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team improved to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) with a 29-7 victory over UW-Whitewater Thursday night in Mitchell Hall. The Warhawks drop to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

UWL entered the dual ranked third and UW-Whitewater 10th in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Top-25 Poll in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III.

The Warhawks took the opening two matches to lead, 7-0. Ninth-ranked Jalen Dunson won by major decision (14-6) over the Eagles' Quintin Wolbert at 125-pounds. John Fortugno followed with a win by decision (11-10) over Zach Weiler at 133.

UWL ran off eight straight victories. Sam Lorenz earned the Eagles' first win with a decision (8-3) over Ethan Pogorzelski at 141-pounds to cut the lead to 7-3. Third-ranked Tyler Goebel followed with a win by decision (8-3) over Scott Busse at 149 to make it 7-6. 

Nolan Hertel, Tate Flege and Leo Draveling each won by major decision to give UWL a 18-7 advantage. Hertel, ranked first in NCAA Division III, won by major decision (15-3) over Jermaine Butler at 157-pounds. Flege won by major decision (12-2) over Aden Byal at 165 and Draveling extended the lead to 18-7 with a major decision (12-2) over Buddy Evangelista at 174.

The Eagles' Marcus Orlandoni secured the team victory with a decision (2-1) over Tyler Haydon at 184-pounds to make it 21-7. Orlandoni is ranked 10th in the country. Eighth-ranked Ben Kawczynski won by technical fall (21-5, 5:54) over Jordan Lewis at 197-pounds and third-ranked Michael Douglas completed the dual with a decision (4-2) over Cadin Koeppel at 285.
                             
UWL returns to action Saturday, January 20 hosting second-ranked Augsburg University (Minn.) at 2 p.m. on Senior Day.
