Box Score 2 Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of UW-Whitewater Saturday afternoon at Prucha Field at James B. Miller Stadium. The Eagles took the opener, 6-4, and the nightcap, 8-2. The Eagles improve to 20-6 overall and 11-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Warhawks drop to 17-9 overall and 7-7 in conference play.
UWL and UW-Whitewater are two of four WIAC teams ranked in this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 with the Eagles ranked 25th and Warhawks 19th. UW-Oshkosh comes in at #21 and UW-Stevens Point is 23rd.
Ty Hamilton went 5-10 in Saturday's doubleheader.
The Eagles scored four runs on four hits in the first inning in Saturday's opener.
Jack Moran and
Anthony Vivian singled to start the game.
Jack Olver doubled to score Moran and move Vivian to third.
Mac Born followed with his third home run of the year to give UWL an early 4-0 lead. UW-Whitewater would get a run in the bottom of the second on an RBI ground out by Bennett Frazer.
Then in the third inning, Olver doubled and advanced on a single by
Ty Hamilton.
George Seaman singled to score Olver and give the Eagles a 5-1 lead. In the bottom half of the third, the Warhawks would get a run scoring double by Adam Cootway. UW-Whitewater cut the deficit to 5-4 with two runs in the fourth inning. Three straight hits including two doubles would drive in two runs for the Warhawks.
Tim Urlaub's single scored Hamilton to give the Eagles a 6-4 lead in the fifth inning.
Isaiah Katz (3-0) retired 15 of the final 17 batters he faced to close the door and earn the complete-game win for the Eagles. Katz allowed four runs (all earned) on 11 hits and three walks while striking out four in 9.0 innings. Cade Berendt (3-2) suffered the loss for UW-Whitewater as he allowed five runs (all earned) on nine hits while striking out two.
As a team, UWL finished with 16 hits including three from Olver and Hamilton. Seman, Urlaub and
Jordan Williams also had multi-hit games with two each. Born finished with three RBI while Olver had one RBI and scored twice.
The Warhawks finished with 11 hits including four from Jacob DeMeyer and two each from Donovan Brandl and Matt Korman.
George Seaman went 4-8 with two RBI and a run scored.
In the second game, the Eagles scored first with two runs on three hits in the second inning. Hamilton led with a single and advanced to second on a ground out.
Eli Roberts then doubled to score Hamilton while Seaman doubled to score Roberts and give UWL a 2-0 lead. UW-Whitewater tied the game at 2-2 on a two-run home run from Brandl in the bottom of the third.
The Eagles regained the lead in the fourth inning with four runs to lead 6-2. After a fly out, Seaman walked and advanced to third on a fielder's choice by WIlliams. Moran reached on an error to score Seaman to give UWL a 3-2 lead. Vivian then hit his WIAC leading 12th home run of the season to knock in Williams and Moran.
A sacrifice fly by Moran in the fifth inning scored Urlaub to make 7-2. The score would remain that way until the eighth inning when the Eagles added to their lead. Williams doubled to lead of the inning and advanced to third on a groundout by Moran. Olver's ground out scored Williams to give the Eagles an 8-2 lead.
Starting pitcher
Owen Anderson retired six of the final seven batters he faced to seal the complete-game win in Saturday's nightcap. Anderson (3-3) gave up three hits, allowing two runs and three walks while striking out three. Logan Eisenbarth (1-2) suffered the loss for the Warhawks as he allowed six runs (two earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out two in 3.2 innings of work.
Once again UWL finished with double-digit hits as it finished with 10 in Saturday's second game. Vivian finished 2-for-5 with three RBI while Seaman was 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI. Born and Hamilton finished with two hits each.
UW-Whitewater had three hits as a team including one each from Brandl, Cootway and Andy Thies.
The two teams will finish up its four-game series on Sunday, April 23 with the first game of the doubleheader starting at noon.
