Baseball Falls To Baldwin Wallace In NCAA III Regional; Plays Wartburg In Elimination Game

Decatur, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team dropped a 5-4 game in the winners bracket of the National Collegiate Athletic Assocition (NCAA) III Regional Saturday afternoon at Workman Field in Decatur, Ill. 
 
THE BASICS

  • Records: UW-La Crosse 33-13, Baldwin Wallace University 33-10
  • NCAA Millikin Regional: Baldwin Wallace is the #1 seed in the regional while UW-La Crosse is the #3 seed. 
  • Up Next: UW-La Crosse will now play Wartburg College (Iowa)  in an elimination game tonight at 8:10 p.m. Baldwin Wallace will then play the winner of Wartburg College (Iowa) and UW-La Crosse on Sunday at 11 a.m. in the Regional Championship. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard first as Carson Petrecca led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run for the early 1-0 lead.
  • UWL would even the score up in the top of the third inning as Andrew Palm reached on a wild pitch after striking out, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by AJ Levy and moved to third on Chris Calico's ground out. Charley Rowan then brought Palm into score with a single to right field. 
  • In the top of the fourth, Emiliano Ramos was hit by a pitch to start the inning and went to third on Sam Viniard's single through the right side of the infield. Keegan Fleischman would then drive in Ramos with a single to give UWL a 2-1 lead. After Palm's sacrifice bunt moved Viniard to third and Fleischman to second, Calico walked to load the bases with two outs. Rowan would then reach on a throwing error which allowed Viniard and Ramos to score and extend the Eagles lead to 4-1. 
  • In the bottom of the fifth with one out, John Panstares singled and went to third on Mason Fixx's double to left center field. Panstares would then score on a ground out by Matt Terzola while Fixx came into score on Sean Kolenich's double to left field to pull the Yellow Jackets to within 4-3. 
  • The score remained 4-3 until the bottom of the eighth inning when Colin West hit a two-run home run to give the Yellow Jackets a 5-4 lead. 
  • Palm would lead off the ninth with a single for the Eagles would that would be all of the offense as the next three batters were retired in order. 

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Offensively, UWL finished with four runs on nine hits and two walks.
  • Rowan finished 2-for-5 with an RBI while Fleischman was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Eagles offensively. 
  • Ethan Pettis (3-2) suffered the loss for the Eagles as he came on in relief and allowed two runs on two hits in 1.0 inning of work.
  • AJ Curtis made the start for the Eagles as he allowed three runs on six hits and one walk while striking out two in 7.0 innings. 
  • The Yellow Jackets finished with five runs on eight hits and one walk. 
  • West was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored while Panstares finished 2-for-3 with a runs scored for the Yellow Jackets. 
  • Sam Hoffman (2-0) came on in relief to earn the win as h allowed just one hit in 1.2 innings of work. 
  • Matt Moscarino got the start for Baldwin Wallace as he allowed four runs on eight hits and two walks in 7.1 innings.
