UWL Defeats Dickinson, Falls to Coe in Extra Innings

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Tucson, Ariz. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a split on its final day of the Tucson Invitational Games Friday. The Eagles defeated Dickinson College (Pa.) 9-1 in five innings before falling 6-5 to Coe College (Iowa) in eight innings. UWL is now 8-7 on the season.

The Eagles got off to a fast start as Kyra Lard and Jordyn McCormack both walked to start the first inning and would advance on a single by Jordan Schultz to load the bases. Lard and McCormack would then both score on back-to-back walks by Marissa Pease and Abbey Bosch. Isabel Queenan then drove in Schultz with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. Dickinson would score their lone run of the game in the bottom of the first inning on a ground out by Paige Hahn to score Jane Lloyd who had reached via a walk.

Then in the third inning, UWL would score two runs on two hits and an error. Schultz led of the inning with a single and advanced to second when Pease reached on a fielders choice. Schultz then scored when Bosch reached via a fielding error. After Queenan loaded the bases with a single, Maddy Bornbach hit a sacrifice fly to score Pease and give UWL a 5-1 lead.

UWL would add two more runs in both the fourth and fifth inning. Lard drove in a run with a triple and then scored on a single by McCormack in the fourth. Then in the fifth, Bornbach drove in a run with her second sacrifice fly of the game while Megan Scheidt drove in a run with a double.

The Eagles finished the game with ten hits including four players with two hits apiece. Lard finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI while Schultz was 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Queenan was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI while Scheidt was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Madi Lee came on in relief for UWL to earn the win as she allowed just two walks while striking out two in two innings of work. Ally Eden pitched the first three innings for the Eagles, allowing one run on four hits in three innings.

Lloyd led Dickinson going 1-for-1 with two walks and a run scored. Lindsay Kucker suffered the loss for Dickinson allowing three runs on one hit while walking four in 0.0 innings of work.

In the game against Coe College (Iowa), neither team was able to get much for offense going over the first three innings. The Kohawks would strike first as they got a two-run home run from Skyler Stookey in the top of the fourth inning. The score remained 2-0 entering the bottom of the seventh inning. With two outs, Lard doubled and scored on a single by McCormack. McCormack then scored on a double by Schultz to tie the score.

In the top of the eighth, Coe would score four runs on two hits and an error to lead 6-2. Madi Parson drove in two runs with a single while Shaylee Dodd drove in a run on sacrifice fly and Bree Mangelsen scored a run when she reached on an error.

The Eagles would not go away quietly though as they scored three runs on three hits. Queenan drove in a run with a single. Bornbach's single then scored two runs for the Eagles to cut their deficit to 6-5. Coe would end the game by retiring the next three batters.

Bosch led the Eagles going 2-for-3 with a run scored while Lard was 2-for-5 and a run scored. McCormack finished 1-for-2 with two walks, an RBI and run scored. Lee suffered the loss for the Eagles as she allowed four runs on two hits and a walk in one inning of work. Remington Stark started the game for the Eagles pitching 4.1 innings and giving up two runs on five hits while striking out three.

Heather Boeckenstedt led the Kohawks going 3-for-4 with a run scored while Parson was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Abbie White earned the win for the Kohawks going 7.0 innings allowing four runs on seven hits, four walks while striking out five. Hannah Ausenhus earned the save pitching the final inning giving up just one hit.

UWL will return to action on Saturday, March 25 when they travel to Winona, Minn. to play St. Mary's University. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
