Newville, Pa. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's cross country team placed 10th at the 2023 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championships Saturday at Big Spring High School.
The Eagles finished with 347 team points while Carleton College (Minn.) won the national title with 151. New York University was second with 154 points, the University of Chicago (Ill.) third with 156 and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (Calif.) fourth with 158.
SUNY Geneseo was fifth (205) followed by Williams College, Mass. (245), Lynchburg University, Va. (257), Emory University, Ga. (285), Central College, Iowa (293) and UWL (347) to round-out the top-10. A total of 32 teams competed.
Katelyn Chadwick led UWL on Saturday, placing 57th overall with a time of 22:06.9 on the 6,000-meter course. The Eagles'
Maddie Hannan was 82nd (22:20.4) and
Madelynn McIntyre 84th (22:22.4). The Eagles'
Maddy Vantassel placed 111th (22:37.0),
Kylie Trousil 133rd (22:45.7),
Sierra Rabe 167th (22:55.9) and
Gwen Hinz 187th (23:02.6).
Fiona Smith of College of Saint Benedict (Minn.) won the national title (19:54.1). A total of 292 runners completed the race.
UWL made its 37th appearance in the NCAA Division III Championships on Saturday. The Eagles have recorded 14 top-six finishes in school history, including eight in the top-four. UWL won the national title in 1983 and placed second in 1982.
The Eagles placed ninth in 2018 as
Sadie Kroll (12th) and
Hannah Beilke (18th) earned NCAA III All-America honors. It marked the first time since 2005 that UWL had a pair of All-America honors when
Julia Rudd placed second and
Kristen Painter 35th.
UWL has 11 individuals in school history finish in the top-10 at the NCAA III Championships.
Tori Neubauer captured the individual national title in 1982 and 1983. Other top-10 finishes include:
Patty Reynolds (fifth) and
Sheri Winter (sixth) in 1985; Winter (fourth) in 1986;
Sara Gilles (ninth) in 1988;
Sarah Bashinski (ninth) in 1996;
Jenny Fielder (eighth) in 1999; Rudd (second) in 2005;
Stephanie Perleberg (seventh) in 2009 and
Laura Mead (10th) in 2014.
