Volleyball Takes First Set; Falls to WIAC Foe UW-Claire

La Crosse, Wis.  - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team took the first set but dropped the next three as they fell to UW-Eau Claire in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action Friday night. 
 
THE BASICS 
Final Score:
  UW-Eau Claire defeated UW-La Crosse 21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-15.
Location: McPhee Physical Education Center, Eau Claire, Wis. 
Records: UWL 13-10 (0-5 WIAC), UW-Eau Claire 12-10 (2-3, WIAC)
 
HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • The Eagles took an early 6-3 lead in the first set on a Grace Nommensen service ace. UW-Eau Claire would score eight of the next nine points to take an 11-7 lead. Trailing 14-10, UWL went on a 5-0 run which included four kills and an assisted block to make it 15-14. After the Blugolds cut their deficit to 20-18, the Eagles scored five of the final six points to take the first set 25-21. 
  • Both teams recorded just nine kills and eight hitting errors as UW-Eau Claire took set two 25-23. The Eagles got off to a fast start in the second set before the Blugolds took a 12-10 lead. UWL turned a 16-14 deficit into an 18-16 lead with a 4-0 run. UWL would take a 22-19 lead on a service ace by Anna Rossner but UW-Eau Claire would score six of the final seven points. 
  • Set three saw the Blugolds score first and extend their lead to its largest at 17-7. UWL would not get any closer than six (23-17) as they were held to a hitting percentage of .162. 
  • UW-Eau Claire's offense got hot in the fourth set as they recorded 20 kills and hit .349 from the floor. UWL was held to just eight kills in the final set while hitting .083. Leading 16-12, UW-Eau Claire went on a 6-1 run to pull away from UWL as they took the fourth set 25-15.

  • Brianne Korducki led the Eagles with 13 kills and 14 digs for her 14th double-double. 
  • Rossner finished with 10 kills, 0 errors in 22 swings for a .455 hitting percentage. Rossner added 5 total blocks. 
  • Taylor Larson led the Eagles with 14 digs. 
  • Bailey Leeke had a match high 17 kills for the Blugolds. 
  • Avery Pennekamp finished with 14 kills and 14 digs for UWEC. 

 UP NEXT
  • UWL returns to action on Saturday (October 21) as they travel to Pella, Iowa to play in a triangular. The Eagles will face Beloit College (Wis.) at 5:00 p.m. and then face host Central College (Iowa) at 7 p.m.
