Louisville, Ky. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team advanced to the semifinals of the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)/Marine Corps Multi-Divisional Duals Friday at the Kentucky Expo Center. The duals are presented by ARMS, Defense Soap, & Capital Construction.
Nolan Hertel earned a pair of victories Friday.
UWL, now 10-0 in duals this season and third in the NWCA Dual Rankings, opened with a 27-10 victory over Castleton University (Vt.) in the first round. The Spartans took a 10-0 lead after three matches. Kaya Bogle won by major decision (9-0) over UWL's
Remington Bontreger at 125-pounds followed by Michael Gonyea winning by decision (7-3) over
Cael Weinzweig at 133. James Rodriguez gave Castleton (Vt.) the 10-0 advantage with a decision (3-1) over
Sam Lorenz at 141.
The Eagles then won the last seven matches.
Tyler Goebel won by decision (1-0) over Elijah Cyr at 149-pounds to make it 10-3.
Nolan Hertel won by major decision (15-5) over Jashon Holmes at 157 and
Kaleb O'Reilly's win by decision (5-0) over Michael Angers at 165 forced a 10-10 tie.
Seth Brossard gave UWL a 15-10 lead with a technical fall (16-0) at 174-pounds over Cooper Fleming.
Kalyn Jahn and
Ben Kawczynski each won by decision to make it 21-10. Jahn won by decision (6-0) over Sampson Wilkins at 184 while Kawczynski defeated Haven Tatarek by decision (5-2) at 197.
Michael Douglas earned the win by fall (4:27) over Shea Garand at 285-pounds to complete the dual win for the Eagles.
UWL earned a 30-13 win over seventh-ranked Wabash College (Ind.) in the quarterfinals. The Little Giants took a 3-0 lead with James Day winning by decision (9-2) over
Brandon Murphy at 125-pounds. Weinzweig tied the dual at 3-3 with a decision (4-2) over Arlie Benson at 133. Wabash (Ind.) took a 6-3 advant

Noah Leisgang earning a technical fall (17-2) over Jesse Herrera. Brossard and Jahn earned back-to-back victories by fall. Brossard defeated Raymond Arebalo at 174 (4:32) with Jahn winning over Charles Baczek at 184 (4:57). Kawczynski completed the win streak with a decision (6-1) over Grant Johnson at 197. The Little Giants' Jack Heldt won by fall (4:09) over Douglas at 285.
UWL returns to action Saturday, January 7 facing second-ranked Augsburg University (Minn.) in the NWCA Semifinals starting at 10 a.m.
