UWL's Six Game Winning Streak Snapped at UW-Oshkosh

Box Score Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell, 61-53, at UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon at Kolf Sports Center. The Eagles are now 14-3 overall and 3-3 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Titans improve to 11-5 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

Paige Schumann got the scoring started for the Eagles as she hit a three-pointer to give them an early 3-0 lead. The Titans took an 8-6 lead, but the Eagles' Casandra Warmsley tied the game at 8-8 with two free throws with 4:02 left in the opening period. UW-Oshkosh scored five of the final seven points to lead 13-10 at the end of the first quarter. 
Kyah Steiner had 12 points and seven rebounds.


Nikki Dienberg's layup and a three-pointer from Kyah Steiner to start the second quarter gave the Eagles a 15-13 lead. UW-Oshkosh went on a 13-2 run to take its largest lead of the first half at 29-17 with :48 remaining. Steiner hit a jumper with :30 left as UWL trailed 29-19 at halftime. 

UWL, receiving votes on this week's D3hoops.com Top-25 Poll, scored six of the first seven points to start the second half to cut its deficit to 30-25 with 7:34 remaining in the third quarter. Leading 36-32 with 3:07 left, UW-Oshkosh scored five of the final seven points to lead 41-34 at the end of the third quarter.  

UW-Oshkosh extended the lead to 46-36 early in the fourth quarter, however, the Eagles got back-to-back three-pointers from Schumann and Steiner to cut the lead to 46-42 with 7:31 left in the game. A layup and three-pointer from Ava Douglas gave the Titans a 53-45 lead with 3:15 remaining. With UWL trailing 55-47, Dienberg hit a three-pointer to pull the Eagles to within five with 2:19 remaining. Steiner hit a layup for the Eagles to cut it to 55-52 with 1:15 left. UW-Oshkosh got a three-pointer from Bridget Froehlke with :55 left to lead 58-52. The Eagles would not get any closer than seven point the rest of the way.

For the game, UWL finished 18-of-54 (33.3%) from the floor, including six-of-23 (26.1%) from the three-point line. The Eagles were 11-of-16 (68.8%) at the free throw line. Schumann led UWL with 14 points while Steiner added 12 points and team-high seven rebounds. Dienberg scored nine points off the bench while Warmsley finished with seven points and six rebounds. Schumann had five rebounds. 

UW-Oshkosh shot 19-of-50 (38%) from the floor, including 10-of-26 (38.5%) from the three-point line. The Titans were 13-of-14 (92.9%) at the line. Douglas led UW-Oshkosh with 20 points while Kate Huml finished with 10. 

UWL will be back in action Wednesday, January 18 hosting UW-River Falls at 7 p.m.
