Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse picked up two more wins on Saturday in Mitchell Hall in the UWL Invitational to finish the weekend 4-0. The Eagles defeated Bethany Lutheran College (Minn.) 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-9) and Hamline University (Minn.) 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-20). UWL improves to 5-7 on the season and have now won five in a row.
With the score tied at 5 in the first set versus Bethany Lutheran, UWL went on a 4-0 run to take an early 9-5 lead. The Vikings scored five of the next six points to tie the game at 10. UWL then recorded four straight kills including two from
Gabrialla Johnson to take a 14-10 lead and extended that lead to 16-11 on a kill from
Anna Rossner. The Vikings would cut their deficit to 21-18 but that would be as close as they would get as the Eagles took the first set 25-22.
The second set started much like the first as the early score was tied 6-6. UWL then scored four of the next five points including back-to-back service aces from
Keller Frinzi to give the Eagles a 10-7 lead. The Eagles then broke the game open taking its largest lead of the set at 18-12. Bethany Lutheran closed the gap to 19-15 on a UWL hitting error; however, the Eagles would get kills from
Madison Weisensel and Johnson to quickly extend their lead back to six (23-17). Two service errors by Bethany Lutheran would end set two as the Eagles won 25-20.
Megan Adams finishes day with 45 assists.
The third set was all UWL as they scored 17 of the first 18 points.
Sydney Fedderly served 12 straight at one point for the Eagles who got four kills from
Brianne Korducki and two from Rossner during the early run. The Eagles would not let the Vikings get any closer than 12 in the final set as they won 25-9.
For the match, UWL hit .244 (40, 20, 86) and were led by Korducki with 12 kills while Johnson added 11.
Megan Adams finished the match with 19 assists while
Summer Schwenn had a team high 14 digs.
Bethany Lutheran hit .012 (23-22-83) for the match and were led by Sarah Storm, Alexis Morsching and Rilee Hohbein with five kills each.
In the win over Hamline, the Eagles took an early 5-1 lead on the serving of Schwenn who recorded back-to-back service aces. They extended the lead to 9-5 to force a Hamline timeout before the Pipers scored four of five to trail 10-9. Leading 15-14, the Eagles scored five of six to take a 20-15 lead on a Weisensel kill. A UWL service error pulled Hamline to with in 20-17 but that would be as close as they would get as UWL took the first set 25-20.
UWL took an early 7-3 lead in the second set behind two kills from Korducki. A service ace by Adams and four straight kills, three from Johnson and one from Rossner, gave the Eagles an 18-13 lead. Two service aces and a kill for the Pipers cut the UWL lead to 19-18. However, the Eagles would get two kills from
Justine Bastyr and two from
Reese Yocum plus a Hamline hitting error to give UWL the 25-19 win in the second set.
The third set saw the Pipers take an early 9-4 lead on three kills from Julianna Boyum.The Eagles slowly chipped away at their deficit and took their first lead of the set at 14-13 on a Korducki kill. UWL extended their lead to 23-17 before Hamline scored three straight to trail 23-20. However, a Johnson kill and an assisted block by Johnson and
Kaity Coisman sealed the win for the Eagles.
UWL finished the match hitting .330 (49, 16, 100) and were led by Korducki with 11 kills and Johnson with 10. Adams finished the match with a double-double as she had 26 assists and 10 digs.
Jackie Oetterer finished with 15 assists while Schwenn chipped in 10 digs. For her efforts in the tournament, Johnson was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Hamline hit .196 (31, 13, 92) for the match and were led by Faith Johnson with eight kills. Jenna Rubbelke led the Pipers with 10 digs while Kaitlyn Kotek had 11 assists.
UWL will return to Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play on Wednesday night when they host UW-Stout at 7 p.m.
