Heptathlon Results (Day 1)
La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's track & field team leads after the first day of competition Friday night at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Stadium Sports Complex.
The Eagles have 93.0 team points while UW-Stout is second with 34.0 and UW-Oshkosh third with 33.0. UW-Eau Claire is fourth (21.0) with UW-River Falls and UW-Whitewater tied for fifth (20.0). UW-Stevens Point is seventh (12.0) followed by UW-Platteville (1.0).
Carley Elmhorst was fourth in the javelin throw.
UWL is striving for its 10th straight title at this year's championships and 36th in school history.
The Eagles took a pair of individual titles on Friday as
Emma Malooly won the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:44.18) and
Skye Digman the hammer throw (183-9). It is Malooly second straight crown in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She is the first runner in league history to win two consecutive titles since UWL's Stephanie Perleberg in 2009 and 2010.
Digman also captured her second straight hammer throw.
UWL's
Maddy Vantassel was second (11:03.55) in Friday's 3,000-meter steeplechase while
Katelyn Chadwick was third (11:15.46).
Along with Digman taking the hammer throw, UWL's
Leah Surprenant placed third (171-10). The Eagles had four of the top-eight finishers in the long jump with
Hannah Zenkovich second (18-3 3/4),
Nicole Lord fourth (17-9 1/2),
Madison Page fifth (17-7) and
Samantha Barrett eighth (17-4 3/4).
Abby Meidl placed second (12-4 3/4) and
Ashley O'Connell tied for sixth (11-3) in the pole vault while
Carley Elmhorst finished fourth (118-1) in the javelin throw.
UWL had five of the top-nine finishers in the 10,000-meter run with
Rachel Jeffers second (37:12.68), Maddy Sweeney third (37:52.49),
Kaylan Marshall fifth (38:22.98),
Julia Anderson sixth (38:32.51),
Charlotte Mueller eighth (38:42.81) and
Jenna Lovejoy ninth (39:04.31).
Allison Anderson is in third-place in the heptathlon.
After four events in the heptathlon,
Allison Anderson is in third-place with 2,590 points and
Skylar White is fifth with 2,562. Athletes competed in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200-meter dash on Friday. The heptathlon concludes Saturday with the the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run.
In preliminary track action on Friday, UWL advanced four to Saturday's 100-meter hurdles final with
Emma Lawrence (14.22), Zenkovich (14.46),
Brooke McDowell (14.98) and
Hannah Holm (15.36). Lawrence (1:00.59),
Melanie Kunze (1:03.57), McDowell (1:03.75) and Holm (1:05.43) also advanced to Saturday's 400-meter hurdles final.
Five runners,
Amber Johnson (57.98),
Mara Schroeder (58.03),
Lilly Halvorson (58.31),
Izi Knoernschild (58.56) and
Anna Ayd (59.59), all advanced to the 400-meter dash final.
Jessica Stelzner (12.52) advanced in the 100-meter dash while
Emily Dawidowich (24.92) and Zenkovich (25.81) moved onto the 200-meter dash final.
Maddie Hannan (2:11.95),
Katie Banie (2:14.30) and
Greta Koehler (2:17.96) will run in Saturday's 800-meter run final after Friday's preliminaries.
