UWL Drops Non-Conference Doubleheader at MSOE

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Milwaukee, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team, playing for the first time since March 19, dropped a non-conference doubleheader at Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) Wednesday afternoon at MSOE Athletic Field. The Raiders took the opener, 2-0, before rallying to win the nightcap, 8-5.  The second game was called after the top of the sixth due to darkness.

UWL falls to 12-7 on the season while MSOE (Wis.), ranked 17th on this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top-25 Poll, improves to 9-1. 

In the opener, the game remained scoreless until the Raiders scored twice in the bottom of the fourth. Kara McKenna singled with one out and advanced to second on Grace Salaja's single. Jenna Trewyn followed with an RBI single score McKenna with the first run of the game. Salaja advanced to third on the play on a UWL error. Morgan Long's groundout scored Salaja to make it 2-0. 

Elise Weinzierl (6-2) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing eight hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks with one strikeout. Remington Stark went 2.0 innings in relief. She allowed two hits while striking out four. The Eagles were held to three hits in the opener with Jordyn McCormack going 2-for-2 with a walk while Anna Jensen finished 1-for-3. 

Kennedy Lehn (6-1) picked up the victory for MSOE (Wis.), going 7.0 innings, allowing three hits and two walks with 11 strikeouts. The Raiders totaled 10 hits in the opener with Salaja and Trewyn each finishing 3-for-4. 

UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the nightcap. McCormack walked with one out and went to second on Hailey Jibben's single. Madi O'Brien followed with an RBI single to score McCormack. The Eagles added to their lead with three runs in the second and one in the third to make it 5-0. UWL scored all three of its runs in the second with two outs. Hannah Lalk walked to start the inning and advanced to third on Kyra Lard's two-out double. McCormack followed with a single to score both runners for a 3-0 lead. McCormack later scored to make it 4-0. 

Lalk singled with two outs in the top of the third and advance to third on Hailey Pitzl's single. Mariah Wick then singled to score Lalk and give UWL a 5-0 lead.

MSOE (Wis.) tied the game in the bottom of the third with five runs. Celine Pacheco scored on a UWL error and Long followed with a grand slam to tie the game. The Raiders took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Reagan Jordan scored the eventual game-winning run on Caitlyn Spreitzer's RBI fielder's choice. Jenna O'Donnell scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-5 and Delaney Martino scored on an Eagles' error to finish the scoring. 

UWL loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth, but failed to score. The game was called after the top of the inning due to darkness. 

The Eagles finished with 12 hits in the nightcap with Lard, McCormack, Leis and Jobben each having two. McCormack scored twice and added two RBI while Lalk scored a pair of runs. Madi Lee (1-2) took the loss, pitching 2.0 innings in relief, allowing four hits and three runs (two earned) while striking out four. Ally Eden started, going 2.0 innings, allowing two hits and one run while Stark pitched 1.0 inning, allowing three hits, four runs (three earned) and one walk with two strikeouts. 

Lehn (7-1) also earned the win in the second game for MSOE (Wis.), going 3.1 innings, allowing four hits while striking out seven. The Raiders finished with nine hits as McKenna, Trewyn and Long each had two. Long had four RBI. 

UWL returns to action Saturday, April 9 hosting UW-Eau Claire at 1 p.m. in the Eagles' home opener at North Campus Field.
