Box Score 2 Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team swept a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader over UW-Stout Tuesday afternoon, winning the first game, 9-0 in five innings, and game two, 4-2, at Alumni Field. The Eagles improve to 19-8 overall and 7-1 in WIAC while the Blue Devils fall to 12-20 overall and 2-8 in conference play.
UW-La Crosse is receiving votes in this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division III Poll.
In the first game, the Eagles were on the board first, 1-0, as Kyra Lard's RBI single in the top of the third inning scored Emily Knight. UWL would extend the lead with eight more runs in the top of the fourth. Anna Jensen started the scoring barrage with a two-run single, which scored Madi O'Brien and Mariah Wick, and Ellie Yeager scored off a Blue Devils' fielding error. Jordyn McCormack was walked with bases loaded, which brought in Jensen and brought the score to 5-0.
Elise Weinzierl earned the win in the opener.
UW-Stout's Mack Wolterstorff relieved Madee Kleinschmid on the mound, but walked Kendra Leis and Hailey Jibben to bring in Megan Scheidt and Lard, and score two more runs. O'Brien's single brought in Leis and McCormack bringing the score to 9-0 before the Blue Devils turned a double play to get out of the inning.
Elise Weinzierl (8-3) earned the win, pitching 5.0 innings allowing one hit with seven strikeouts. Kleinschmidt (3-9) suffered the loss, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing eight runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
O'Brien led the Eagles offense, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and a double while Jensen went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Jibben, McCormack, and Leis all added an RBI. Lexy Kupczak had the only hit for UW-Stout.
In the nightcap, UWL went up first 1-0 in the top of the second on a RBI double by Yeager that brought in Wick, but the Blue Devils took their first lead of the day in the bottom of the second with RBI singles by Alexa Anderson and Emma Muehlenbeck.
The Eagles evened the score 2-2 in the top of the third, as Lard doubled to right field, and McCormack's double scored Lard.
UWL would reclaim the lead in the top of the fifth as Scheidt singled to left field and Lard's sacrifice bunt advanced her to second. McCormack's fourth home run of the season scored Scheidt to give the Eagles a 4-2 lead. UW-Stout would get runners on first and second in the bottom of the seventh, but the potential-winning batter popped up to Leis for the final out of the game.
Kyra Lard had two hits and two RBI in the doubleheader.
Remington Stark (6-2) pitched the final 5.1 innings of the game to earn the win for UWL, allowing five hits with 11 strikeouts. Anna Blanford (5-4) pitched all 7.0 innings for UW-Stout, suffering the loss by allowing four runs on 11 hits with one strikeout.
UWL finished with 11 hits, led by McCormack going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Jibben went 2-for-3. UW-Stout had seven hits in the nightcap with Muehlenbeck going 2-3 with an RBI and a double while Anderson finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and one run.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, April 27 at North Campus Field hosting UW-Platteville with the first game of the doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
