Davenport, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team opened its 2022 season with a 20-14 loss at St. Ambrose University (Iowa) Wednesday night. The Bees were also playing their season opener.
UWL took a 1-0 lead at 13:15 with
Megan Feeney scoring off a
Grace Willmott assist.
Abigail Steigauf unassisted goal gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead at 11:01. St. Ambrose (Iowa) scored the next three goals to take its first lead at 3-2 on Maddie Wiltrout's goal at 7:41. Feeney tied the game at 4:05. The Bees took a 4-3 lead after the first quarter on Wiltrout's goal with 1:50 remaining.Â
After St. Ambrose (Iowa) took a 6-3 advantage, Feeney and
Britta Nelson cut the lead to 6-5 with goals for UWL. The Bees led, 9-6, at halftime.
The Eagles scored the first three goals of the third quarter to force a 9-9 tie on goals from
Lauren Schwartz,
MacKenzie Crouse and Steigauf. The game was tied, 11-11, after the third quarter.Â
UWL took a 13-12 advantage with 12:49 remaining in the game after back-to-back goals from Feeney. St. Ambrose (Iowa) went on a 8-0 scoring run to take a 20-13 lead, including the tying goal from Anabelle Brown with 8:15 left and the go-ahead goal from Audrey Warner with 7:18 remaining.Â
UWL finished with 23 shots in the game while St. Ambrose (Iowa) totaled 42. Feeney led UWL with six goals while Steigauf finished with three goals and one assist. Crouse totaled two goals. Abigale Furlano recorded 13 saves for the Eagles. Feeney's six goals ties the single-game school record of
Mackenzie Chvatal set at Anderson University (Ind.) on March 8, 2020. UWL's 14 goals Wednesday night are tied for third-most in single-game school history. UWL had a school record 20 goals versus Wartburg College (Iowa) on March 13, 2021.
Warner led St. Ambrose (Iowa) with seven goals with Sarah Diehl finishing with five and Wiltrout four. Lauren Hoesly had three goals and two assists. Maggie Samson recorded five saves for the Bees.Â
UWL returns to action Tuesday, March 8 hosting Clarke University (Iowa) at 5 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.Â
