UWL Defeats William Paterson, Falls to Kalamazoo

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Leesburg, Fla. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a split in Florida on Friday as they defeated William Paterson University (N.J.) 9-3 while losing 3-1 to Kalamazoo College (Mich.). The split moves the Eagles to 10-5 on the season.
 
In the win against William Patterson, UWL scored at least one run in each of the first four innings to take a 7-1 lead. Kendra Leis hit a two out double in the bottom of the first and scored on a single by Hailey Jibben to take a 1-0 lead. Then in the second inning, UWL got two runs on back-to-back two-out RBI singles by Megan Scheidt and Kyra Lard.

Leis would hit her second double of the game in the third inning and Joette Kassa pinch ran for Leis eventually scoring on a ground out by Ellie Yaeger. The Pioneers would score a run in the top of the fourth, but the Eagles would respond with three more runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth. Leis highlighted the inning with her third double to drive in two runs while Jordyn McCormack drove in a run with a single.
 
William Patterson scored two runs in the fifth to cut their deficit to 7-3 on a two run double by Carly McDaniel. UWL would cap off the scoring for the Eagles with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on a single by Lard and a groundout by Jibben.  
 
As a team, the Eagles finished with 15 hits which is the most hits in a game since the Eagles had 16 against UW-Stevens Point on April 23rd, 2019. Four Eagles finished with multiple hits including Lard (three), Leis (three), Jibben (two) and McCormack (two). Lard scored and drove in two runs while Leis and Jibben each drove in two runs.
 
Elise Weinzierl (5-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Eagles allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out two in five innings of work. Remington Stark pitched the final two innings for the Eagles striking out five of the six batters she faced. Lindsey Acker (1-1) suffered the loss for the Pioneers giving up three runs on five hits while striking out three.
 
In the game against the Hornets of Kalamazoo College, the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Anna Jensen led off the second with a single and advanced to second when Ally Eden reached on an error. Jensen then scored on a run batted in single by Hailey Pitzl.
 
The Hornets would take the lead in the third inning by scoring two runs on three hits and an error. Lucy Hart drove in the two runs for the Hornets with a single. The Eagles would threaten to score in the fifth inning as they had runners on first and third with one out. But the Hornets would get out of the jam by forcing a fielder's choice ground out and a pop up to the shortstop.
 
Kalamazoo would add a run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Bella Caza. UWL would get a single in the sixth by Jensen but that would be the only Eagle runner to reach base in the final two innings.
 
The Eagles finished the game against Kalamazoo with six hits including three by Jensen and two by Lard. Eden suffered the loss for the Eagles as she allowed two runs on three hits in three innings of work. Eden also finished with four strikeouts while walking none. Stark (1.0 innings) and Maddi Lee (2.0 innings) pitched the final three innings giving up one run on two hits while striking out three apiece.
 
UWL will play their final two games of their spring break trip on Saturday, March 19th in Leesburg, Fla. The Eagles will play the University of Southern Maine at 8:45 A.M. (Central) and Farmingdale State College (N.Y.) at 11:15 A.M. (Central).
