UWL Wins Second Straight WIAC Title; Captures Three Events

Platteville, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's track and field team captured its second straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Championship (presented by Culver's) Saturday night in UW-Platteville's Williams Fieldhouse. The Eagles secured their 28th (1978-81, 1983, 1985-87, 1994, 1997, 2000-05, 2007-10, 2013-18, 2020, 2022) indoor title in school history with 244 points. 

UWL's 244 points are the most since UW-Oshkosh totaled 261 in 1996.

UW-Eau Claire placed second Saturday with 115 points and UW-Oshkosh third with 97. UW-Stout was fourth (62), followed by UW-Platteville (52), UW-Stevens Point (32), UW-Whitewater (31) and UW-River Falls (29). 

The 2021 championships were canceled due to the COVID-19 public health threat. 

UWL won three individual and one relay title Saturday. The Eagles' Hannah Zenkovich captured the pentathlon with a school and WIAC championship record 3,741 points. She breaks her own school record of 3,664 points set earlier this season and the league record of 3,589 points by UW-Stout's Meagan Ward in 2014. Zenkovich also break the Williams Fieldhouse record of 3,443 by UWL's Erin McCauley in 2015.

Skylar White finished second (3,363 points) and Allison Anderson sixth (2,096) in the pentathlon Saturday.

UWL won a pair of field events titles on Saturday as Skye Digman captured the weight throw (60-7 3/4) and Miah Keller the triple jump (38-9). It marks Digman's second straight league title in the weight throw. She broke her own school record of 60-7 1/4 set in 2021. Keller is the first student-athlete for UWL to win the triple jump since Betsy Schreier in 2019. 

The Eagles' 4x400-meter relay of Amber Johnson, Lilly Halvorson, Melanie Kunze and Brooke McDowell won the WIAC title (3:56.77). It is UWL's third straight 4x400-meter title. 

Other top finishes in the field events included Samantha Barrett fourth (37-7 1/4) and Jessica Stelzner fifth (37-7 1/4) in the triple jump. 

On the track, Emma Lawrence was second (8.65), Zenkovich fourth (8.83), McDowell fifth (9.05) and Hannah Holm eighth (9.43) in the 60-meter hurdles. Maddie Hannan was second (10:09.66) and Katelyn Chadwick fifth (10:18.05) in the 3,000-meter run.

Emily Dawidowich placed third (7.78), Haley Durst fifth (7.86) and Stelzner seventh (7.95) in the 60-meter dash while Lawrence finished third (25.71) and Carley Elmhorst seventh (26.31) in the 200-meter dash. 

In the 800-meter run, Katie Banie placed third (2:18.33) and Claire Koenecke seventh (2:20.57) in the 800-meter run.

UWL returns to action Friday, March 4 at the Wartburg College (Iowa) Qualifier at 1:30 p.m.
