Box Score 2 Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team splits its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader at UW-Platteville Friday afternoon. The Eagles won the opener, 2-1, before the Pioneers came back to take the nightcap, 4-2. UWL is now 11-12 overall and 7-5 in the WIAC while UW-Platteville is 13-13 overall and 6-6 in the conference.
UWL took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning in the opener.
Katie Block singled to start the inning and went to second after
Allison Oster was hit-by-pitch. Both runners moved into scoring position on a ground out and Block scored on
Sydne Shattuck's fielder's choice bunt. The Eagles took a 2-0 lead when Oster came in on
Megan Scheidt's bunt single.
UW-Platteville got on the board in the bottom of the seventh. Alejandra Ochoa singled to start the inning and went to second on Amanda Stanczuk's ground out. Riley Kelsch singled to move Ochoa to third. Haili Cota then singled to drive in Ochoa to cut the lead to 2-1.
Elise Weinzierl replaced starter
Maddie Muelken for UWL and recorded the final two outs of the game. Kelsch was forced out at third for the second out and Rachel Plautz struck out to end the game with runners and first and second.
Muelken (6-6) earned the win for UWL, pitching 6.1 innings, allowing eight hits, one run and one walk while striking out two. Weinzierl picked up her third save of the season, going 0.2 of an inning with a strikeout. Four different players had a hit for the Eagles.
Ashton Hoeppner (4-8) suffered the loss for UW-Platteville, going 7.0 innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out 11. The Pioneers totaled eight hits in the opener with Shannon Gaul going 3-for-3.
In the nightcap, UW-Platteville took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Gaul scored on a two-out Stanczuk single. UWL tied the game in the top of the third.
Emily Knight walked with one out and went to third on Block's two-out single.
Kendra Leis followed with an RBI single to tie the contest.
The Pioneers regained the lead with a pair of runs in the third on back-to-back run-scoring doubles from Gaul and Angela Laabs. The Eagles cut it to 3-2 in the top of the fifth when
Sabrina Scardamaglia scored on a Pioneers' error. UW-Platteville took a 4-2 lead in the sixth with Ochoa scoring on a Kelsch single.
Shattuck (5-2) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing five hits, three runs and one walk. The Eagles had eight hits with Block and
Jordyn McCormack each finishing with two. Block had a hit in both games of Friday's doubleheader, extending her school record hitting streak to 21.
Hoeppner (5-8) earned the victory, going 4.0 innings, allowing three hits, one run (unearned) and two walks while striking out four. The Pioneers had six hits with Gaul finishing 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI.
UWL returns to action Tuesday, May 4 hosting UW-Eau Claire in a non-conference doubleheader at North Campus Field at 2 p.m.
