Box Score 2 Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team split a doubleheader at UW-Stout on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Eagles won the opener 9-3, before the Blue Devils came back to take the nightcap, 4-3.
The first game of the doubleheader was a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) contest postponed from April 10 at UWL's North Campus Field. UWL is now 10-11 overall and 6-4 in the WIAC while UW-Stout is 5-18 overall and 0-10 in the conference.
UWL was the home team in Wednesday's opener. UW-Stout took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Kaylee Peterson scored on a Meghan Kelly. UWL tied it in the bottom of the inning as
Sabrina Scardamaglia singled to start the inning, stole second nad later scored on a
Kendra Leis single. The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning with
Sydne Shattuck leading off with a single, advancing to second on a
Megan Scheidt sacrifice bunt and scored on
Emily Knight's two-out single.
The Blue Devils regained the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third on a Shannon Jones' RBI double and Kelly run-scoring single. The score remained 3-2 until UWL tallied seven runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Katie Block's bases-loaded walk tied the game at 3-3 and
Jordyn McCormack's single gave the Eagles a one-run lead.
Allison Oster also drew a bases-loaded walk to score a run to make it 5-3 and Shattuck followed with a grand slam to give UWL a 9-3 advantage.
Maddie Muelken (5-6) earned the win for UWL, pitching 4.0 innings in relief, allowing no hits or walks while striking out three. Shattuck started, going 3.0 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs with three strikeouts. The Eagles finished with 10 hits in the opener with Shattuck going 2-for-3 with two runs and four RBI. Scardamaglia went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Knight finished 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.
Block went 1-for-2 in the game, setting a school record with a hit in her 19th straight game.
Melea Bruns (1-9) suffered the loss for UW-Stout, going 4.1 innings, allowing eight hits, eight runs and four walks with two strikeouts. The Blue Devils had seven hits with Jones and Kelly each going 2-for-3.
In the nightcap, UW-Stout took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Peterson's RBI single got the scoring started and Kelly followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0. The Blue Devils added a pair of unearned runs on an Eagles' error with two outs in the inning.
After leaving the bases-loaded in the fourth inning, UWL cut the lead to 4-2 in the top of the fifth as
Mariah Wick scored on Knight's bases-loaded walk and
Kenzie Goethel came in on
Nicole Trussoni's sacrifice fly. The Eagles made it 4-3 in the seventh on
Gillian Rinehart's two-out single scoring Scheidt, but UWL left the tying run on the bases.
Elise Weinzierl (0-4) took the loss for UWL, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs (two earned) with two strikeouts.
Rachel Niederkorn went 2.2 innings, recording three strikeouts. Four different players had a hit for the Eagles.
Seven different players had a hit for UW-Stout.
UWL returns to action Friday, April 30 at UW-Platteville for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
