UW-Whitewater Earns Pair of Shutouts over UWL

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team dropped a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader at UW-Whitewater Friday afternoon at van Steenderen Softball Complex. The Warhawks, receiving votes on this week's National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Top-25 Poll, won the opener, 7-0, and the nightcap, 3-0. 

UWL drops to 19-15 overall and 7-5 in the WIAC while UW-Whitewater improves to 24-10 overall and 9-3 in the conference.

In the opener, UW-Whitewater took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Emily Rux walked with two outs and scored on Meg Cohrs' double. The score remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth when the Warhawks scored three times on three hits. Nikki Mikosz gave UW-Whitewater a 3-0 lead with a two-run double and Kayla Seymour later singled to make it 4-0. 

The Warhawks scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth without the benefit of a hit as the Eagles committed three errors. All three runs came in on a fielding error with two outs. 

Caitlyn Hughes (12-3) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing six hits, four runs and three walks while striking out two. Sydne Shattuck went 2.1 innings, allowing one hit, three runs (all unearned) and two walks. The Eagles were held to one hit, a lead-off single from Kendra Leis in the top of the seventh.

Bella Matthias (12-2) earned the complete-game victory for UW-Whitewater, going 7.0 innings, allowing one hit and four walks with eight strikeouts. The Warhawks finished with seven hits with Cohrs going 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored while Kelly Berguland finished 2-for-2.

In the nightcap, UW-Whitewater took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Vera Pflugradt scored on Nicole Neitzel's fielder's choice. The Warhawks added a pair of runs in the fourth on Pflugradt's two-run home run. 

Maddie Muelken (3-5) took the loss for UWL, going 4.0 innings, allowing six hits and three runs with one strikeout. Shattuck went 2.0 innings, allowing two hits with one strikeout. The Eagles finished with six hits as Sydney Murphy and Allison Oster each had two. 

Julia Camardo picked up the victory for UW-Whitewater, pitching 5.0 innings, allowing six hits with four strikeouts. Dani Biesiada earned the save, going 2.0 innings. The Warhawks totaled eight hits as Cohrs, Pflugradt and Caitlin Catino each had two. 

UWL returns to action Sunday, April 28 at UW-Platteville in a noon doubleheader in the regular-season finale.
