UWL Earns Sweep in Regular-Season Home Finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of UW-Stevens Point Tuesday afternoon at North Campus Field in its final regular-season games of the season. The Eagles won the opener, 8-0 in six innings, and the nightcap, 7-4, to improve to 19-13 overall and 7-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The Pointers drop to 15-18-1 overall and 1-8-1 in the WIAC. 

Caitlyn Hughes (12-2) earned the complete-game victory in the opener Tuesday, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing five hits while striking out four. She improves to 39-21 in her career at UWL, moving into a third-place tie in victories with Jessie Carignan (2014-17). Heather Schultz (2008-10) is second with 47 wins while Sally Wenzel (2000-03) is the career leader with 49. Hughes also moved into a tie for fourth in career appearances (84) Tuesday and ranks fourth in career strikeouts (274) and seventh in career innings (365.1).

UW-Stevens Point advanced one runner past second base in Tuesday's opener as Hughes threw her third shutout of the year. 

UWL took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on Sabrina Scardamaglia's RBI single and Nicole Trussoni's run-scoring double. The Eagles added to their lead in the fifth on Mia Schmidtke's solo home run. UWL then scored five times on seven hits in the bottom of the sixth to earn the victory by run-rule. Katie Block had a two-run home run in the inning while Emily Knight and Kendra Leis each had RBI doubles. 

The Eagles totaled 14 hits with Schmidtke finishing 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Leis, Scardamaglia and Sydne Shattuck each had two hits. 

Ashley Cohen (2-3) took the loss for UW-Stevens Point, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing six hits and two runs with three strikeouts. The Pointers had five hits with Rachael Wakefield going 2-for-2.

UW-Stevens Point took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in the nightcap on Sammy Buerger's RBI single and Morgan Johnson's fielder's choice to score a run. UWL came back with runs in the bottom of the first and second inning to force a 2-2 tie. Schmidtke connected on her second solo home run of the game in the bottom of the first while Sydney Murphy scored on Knight's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second.

Kendra Leis went 5-for-8 in Tuesday's doubleheader.


The Eagles took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on Stephanie Cole's single. The Pointers retied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth on Johnson's RBI ground out. Knight's two-run double in the bottom half of the inning gave the Eagles a 5-3 lead, but Lauren Luedtke's RBI single in the top of the sixth made it a one-run game. 

UWL scored twice in the sixth on an Scardamaglia run-scoring ingle and Kathryn Vander Schaaf's ground out. 

Shattuck (4-6) earned the victory, pitching 3.0 innings in relief. She allowed three hits and two runs (one earned). Maddie Muelken started, going 4.0 innings, allowing seven hits and two runs while striking ouf four. UWL had 16 hits with Leis and Shattuck each going 3-for-4. Schmidtke, Block and Murphy each had two hits while Knight had a game-high three RBI. 

Cohen (2-4) also suffered the loss in the second game, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing eight hits, four runs and one walk with two strikeouts. The Pointers totaled 10 hits in the nightcap as Luedtke finished 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and Wakefield went 2-for-3. 

UWL returns to action Saturday, April 27 at UW-Whitewater at 2 p.m.
